I like the more straight up rock songs like Fire and Manic Depression. Voodoo Chile only if your guitarist can handle it, and definitely not "Purple Haze" (it's just been done to death). I tried doing "Are You Experienced" once - complete disaster.

Hendrix is tough because its usually men who really like his stuff more than women. Clubs want bands that keep people dancing and drinking. At most gigs its the women who do most of the dancing. Personally, I try to avoid playing anything by Hendrix. Every time I've seen a band do any of his songs everyone leaves the dance floor.

I don't think I've ever seen a Hendrix tune not go over in my area.

Journey
Aerosmith
The Who
Led Zeppelin
Thin Lizzy
The Eagles
ZZ Top
Billy Idol

Looks like a set from one of my old bands. Remember to make the ladies happy. Fire worked for us. If the ckicks stay, the guys will. The girls liked love in an elevator - you just have to pull off the vocals and keep it danceable during gtr solo. Basic formula for all music.

Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower with some of Led Zep's Stairway to Heaven mixed in with it. Same chords... Interesting mix. Crowd likes it...

+1 for Hey Joe also...

Red House goes over very well for us. We don't play a lot of slower songs, but this is one of them and it really works.

At the last gig, we played Hey Joe as a sound check and the people who were there really liked it. It was the first time we ever played it (never even practiced it) and so we were pretty much winging it, but that seemed to work also.

If I were considering Hendrix tunes to perform in a cover band, I definitely would not consider any of the usual standbys that are always suggested, some of which have been so overdone for so many years, that people have become sick of them.

A couple of GREAT Hendrix tunes, that have not (yet) been overdone, that lend themselves well to interesting new arrangements are:

- Stone Free
- You've Got Me Floatin'

^^^^ This is why I suggested Little Miss Lover. You introduce it as a Hendrix song, and play something that is close to a modern, danceable, funk/rock beat. Not overdone, and won't send the ladies to the restroom or bar, which is what playing a Hendrix tune usually does, especially Hey Joe, Fire, or the other usual suspects. Some others I have had good luck with are Come on, Rainy Day (requires a really groovy drummer), and suprisingly, Remember, which nobody knows, but has the sentimental lyrics the ladies love, and can be played with almost any kind of beat you like.

I am surprised. Hey Joe keeps the dance floor packed for us.
