Playing for the love of music as opposed to playing for money is a common, clear cut request. Simply put, it means someone is looking for people who are self supporting by means usually other than music, and aren't going to complain if they don't get paid. And there are a lot of musicians out there who fit the part and are willing to this. It's an understandable request when it's a band creating music together. This guy, however, wants you to learn HIS songs, note for note, quickly... and do it for nothing. And if somewhere down the line you disagree with him on something, regardless of how much time and effort you put into it, he'll find someone esle.

Run from these people. This is experience talking. You can find the same people who will pay you. Happily.
Amen!! This is typical of 60% of the CL ads I see. Exactly what it is saying.

Sadly, this ad is better than any CL ad in my neck of the woods. I just responded to an ad Sunday. The guitarist got back to me and sent me a list of 10 songs. Sidenote: Why people need 10 songs to know where I'm at and if I'd be a good fit is beyond me. Still, this was short. The band before gave me 58 songs to learn, one band gave me 86. For an audition. 86 songs. Anyways...the guitarist tells me they have a show this coming Saturday. (Ahh, now we're getting somewhere.) It's a benefit show. (No pay) We're also not going to rehearse before Saturday. Also, they've already re-listed the CL ad in case I bomb.
I envy you.

Ridiculous- Run and run fast--- my new rule is I don't learn more than 4-5 new songs for ANY audition unless they are ones I already know. Also, you are rehearsing on GIG day? That is complete BS, NEVER< NEVER, EVER... Tell these fools what they can do, while bassist are not in quite as short supply as GOOD singers, we are still way fewer than guitards, and stick bangers.

It *could* just mean that you'll be playing in and around Nashville. Tough market.

But the plural "as we grow" and "contact us now" are flags. More than a couple decent players working a side project in Nashville probably aren't fishing CL for bass and drums.

Those plurals also clash with the capitalized "A[c]oustic Southern Rock Artist." The job's a group gig when "we" need something, but a singular Artist when you get right down to the real nitty gritty.

You get an A+ for reading comprehension.

"Curious buy turned off by wanted ad"

Well I'm curious as to the meaning of the title of this thread?

Guess I forgot to mention I passed on this "offer". To the OP, I hope you find something more favorable than this...stuff.

Curious bi or bi-curious? Would bi-curious in the bass world be owning two basses; one with flatwounds and the other with roundwound strings?

I thought it meant he wanted to play both bass and guitar.

Alright, it was late and I was tired. My finger slipped from the "T" to the "Y" at the end of "BUT" so that's why it says "BUY" instead of "BUT." I am a straight male who is happily married to a beautiful woman with 3 adorable children. There, that feels better to get that off my chest.

Also, this was not a CL ad. This was an online ad I saw in an email from a musicians website (not www.bandmix.com) that helps guys like myself get better gigs and informs me of opportunities in my area and in other areas as well. I shy away from CL as much as possible. Any time you get something for free, chances are you'll have to sift through a bunch of garbage before you find a gem. If you have to pay for an ad, you'd better be serious before you post it because it's costing you now.

Joe Nerve, your opinion, and those who have a similar opinion, is the closest to what I was thinking about the ad. I guess it's just that there are 2 classes of musicians in this world, probably more if you broke them all down. There are those who do it for fun and those who do it as a profession. I fall in the latter class. There's nothing wrong with either class, just 2 different motives for doing the same thing.

Sounds like a start up band that isn't ready to gig yet. Not necessarily a pass, it can't hurt to look into it.

Some good observations here ^ ^. The real pros already know a lot of local rythm section players. Hell, that's half the problem with finding work in Nashville!

It means that his project can't or hasn't brought in any money so if you want to join then you should not expect to be paid much. Or at all.

Acoustic Southern Rock?

So, .38 Special, Blackfoot, Lynryd Skynryd and Molly Hatchet unplugged or what? Is he going to stand there strumming a Martin copy doing bad impressions of Danny Joe Brown while the rest of the band is playing electric?

I think the best course of action is to read as much negativity into four lines of ad copy as possible.
