Did the Audition, Got the gig

Sign in to disble this ad
After all the horror stories of Craigslist auditions I thought I would share a good story.

Background: Was in a gigging local band for 3 years that broke up last fall. Drummer, singer, and myself have been playing with a few guitarists to get a new band going but it was not going anywhere. To me it seemed like re-heated leftovers from the old band. These guys are friends and live in the neighborhood so I felt a bit stuck.

Trolling Craigslist in July and saw some possible opportunities, 1 in particular stood out. Was going on vacation so I did not reply. Early August saw a new CL post from the same group, apparently they still needed a bassist. Got in touch with them and setup the audition. It is a Sheryl Crow Tribute Band that is newly formed with members from CL.

Audition was for 4 songs and 1/2 hour time slot. Ended up jamming with them for 1 1/2 hours and spent another hour talking and having some beers. They offered the bass chair, I grabbed it. The singer does a very good job with the Crow material and the guitarists and drummer are great players. There are also 2 backup singers who we did a rehearsal with last week that are adding a lot to the sound.

The material is decent, the players are great, it is age appropriate ( I am in my 40's, age range is from 30 to 52) and it is close to home. It is still in the honeymoon period but everyone seems motivated and is having fun. If it does not work out the experience so far will have been worth it.

The guys from the old band have been supportive and understood when I told them I need to focus on this for a while.

And a good one it is!

On rare occasion there are good CL ads, in my case I read the ad on a Thursday morning for a pro blues guitarist seeking bass and drums (he had a great ad with references and all). Emailed the poster right then, he just moved to town that day! I asked him to be at a local blues club that night as I was playing bass there all night, and he did even though he was still unpacking boxes. The "audition" if you will was live on stage and it clicked, called in the drummer I have played with the last two and a half years for a Monday session. We breezed through some ten tunes and declared it a fit.

Best of luck on your new venture!

Wonderful and congrats.I know what a pain auditioning is and on top of that finding good bands and good people are 2 separate deals.

I auditioned for a band that was hot, however as people and personality and attitude they stunk.
