Do your band play mostly covers or original songs?

Hi guys, we have had a discussion on our local Czech bass forum about original bands and cover bands.
From long years of reading TB I got the impression that the majority of TB'ers (especially in US) play in cover bands and only minority play original songs exclusively.

In Czech it is the opposite, most bands play original music and you almost can not see a club with resident band playing covers (pop/rock) - which is a very common practice in US, as I understand.

So lets see the poll results.. thanks.

100% original. Cover bands are rare here in Portugal too.

We only play 1 cover song. I'd like to add one more, but I prefer originals.

I do covers almost exclusively. I used to be in an all original project, but it was a lot of work and very hard to sell.

I dig being in a cover band. My intention was never to get famous. I'm just gigging for the free beer!!!

Well, that and as a means to be able to justify buying a new piece of gear from time to time........

Covers, although almost everyone in the band has an original or two that we do from time to time, and of the originals we do on a regular basis, our youngest member, the keyboard/co-lead vocalist writes most of them and they are good! But still only make up about 15% of what we do. Lets face it, in a club situation, most people want to hear something familiar or at least very good and after 50 plus years of rock n roll, there are a lot of good song writers out there that are better than our 5-6 times a month band.

Here's what I do:

DISCO DUCK (Dance/Party/Corporate Band) - 100% covers

wünderland (Classic/Prog Rock) - both, at one time, 50/50

CODA (Led Zeppelin Tribute) - Only covers, only Zep

INITIATION (Original Prog) - 1-2 set shows all original, longer we add in some covers

Lenny Revell Band (Piano Pop Artist) - have 3 albums of original, but throw covers in too

I play in an original Improv band. Though this weekend we're throwing in a cover of Erotic City for the hell of it.

I play in two cover bands here in the US. One band does only covers, and the other does mostly covers. Although we have three originals so far. Our hope is to have 1/2 covers and 1/2 originals. Some venues, like bars or casinos, pretty much only want covers. Songs that everyone knows and can sing along to. However other venues, usually ones for the door, do better with originals; different audience. So, we'd like to get a piece of both markets.

When I played as a full time professional we very successfully played 95% original material. Now I do not depend upon music for my living and I play 95% covers. To me it really is a time factor limitation. It takes a great deal of time to write and arrange good original material; especially if you have four part vocal harmony as we did.

Originals suck.

Honestly, I love doing both, but I'm doing covers so I can afford to buy more gear.

I'm surprised by the results so far. I thought covers people would be at least 5 to 1. Right now originals have more by almost 2 to 1.

I bet this will change.

IMO the operative in the O.P. is " MOSTLY"
I play in 3 different projects, 3 different genres.
All 3 play MOSTLY, which as I understand it is 51% or above, covers.
We also play originals, but MOSTLY covers.
