not all. about half we play in a flat.

seriously though, the only "correct" key is the one the singer prefers.

Funny, I have been working with a cover band in Az. The set of originals and covers (Mostly covers) is indeed in Eb. I though it was just this band, apparently not

We play everything half a step down in E flat. Suits our singers voice better.

Most of the stuff in one of my bands is tuned down a 1/2 step, but there are some tunes that are tuned in standard. We have horn players in the band, so we notate everything in actual key not relative. So, if I'm playing a song in E tuned down a half step, we notate it as being in Eb.

Amen.

I find that I sing best in Eb, Bb, and Gb. Tuning down a half step makes it easier to play the songs in Eb and Gb. Bb is a little harder, and I may use a capo or use closed chord forms if I'm playing guitar. But, even if I were playing bass, I would still tune down a 1/2 step as I'm still playing a 4 banger.

My band plays everything tuned a 1/2 step down. Its takes the edge off for our singer.

Virtually no cover band is going to get "extra credit" from rountine gig patrons if they do a difficult to sing tune in the original tuning vs tuning it down a half step. I would rather have my lead vocalist cut a few corners (un-noticable to most) and remain strong all gig long than try to be mr/ms tough guy and sing in the original tuning and be losin' it by the last set. For those who can do BOTH, congratulations. How much extra do the bars pay you for it?

Interesting point.

On the flip side, there are plenty of bands that didn't get called back because the singer sang off key.

I don't care about the original key. I care that the vocalist can nail the notes. If I can alter the key to give the vocalist or anyone an easier time performing, I will.
