I'm in a blues/ rock band, but I'm not really a blues/ rock guy.
Plus, I already look cool.

None of them have played out in years.
Wouldn't you say guys like that are not really gigging band material.
No offence, but it would seem there has to be some degree of flexibility.
Blue | I play what I want to play because my musical 'heros' did the same thing. Sure, I'm not thrilled that there aren't more gigs for my band but that is because the other members of the band play in other bands that are higher on their priority list than this one. They tell me they dont want to "over-saturate" our area with this band yet they play in bands that have "over-saturated" the entire scene for years with the same basic sets of music. Tell me that isn't "over-saturation".
The bottom line is that their first priority is making money. Fine. My priority is playing music that appeals to me.
These cover bands that canvass the area month after month really aren't that great, some of them even suck, but they bring in a crowd that drinks, and that is the only thing that matters. A few years later that band disappears and another fills their spot.
BORING.
I have other musical priorities and I really don't care about the music "business".
If that means I sit in my room with my headphones and bass then so be it. At least I don't have to wait on the band on the CD and can take a piss break and or eat something anytime I decide to hit the pause button. That band on CD is always ready to play and always play it the same way. Nice.

Blue | Alrighty then..glad you look cool. It is important to look the part and like a BL once told me never show uup for a gig where you look like one of the crowd. You are a performer..the band..look and act like it.

However, seems like a lot of guys are into showing up foe a gig wearing their office clothes. They just don't get the whole look like your in a band thing.
By the way, a little clarification, I look cool for a 60 year old. Lol

It's all about your spirit, knowledge and attitude.
For me, it's my spirit and attitude. I doubt I look like Mr. Rock & Roll on stage.

He had gone for years without being in a band.

Also, that crowd cannot be having a good time - there's a music stand on that stage. They are clearly unimpressed. |

Blue | I went for nine years at home before my latest band. 2001-2010. I'm not 'fine' with that but at the same time I have stated that I'm a bit narrow with my flexability and I'm also well aware that it's not the 1970's anymore where bands could entertain the thought of more complex, extended pieces of music. I want to be in a working band but the kind that I want to be in isn't common and usually you have to be in the right place at the right time to hook up with a band you really want to be in. I just think it sucks to have to toe the line with the same kind of 'party rock/dance' music that seems to be the only acceptable thing to play if you want to play on a stage. I think about wanting to be in a prog type band or something like a Frank Marino/Pat Travers/Jeff Beck type of thing. Who wants to hear that stuff? Besides me?

I have to be in a band that's has a local market.
I have to be in a band, have to be on stage, I thrive on the attention.
As long as I'm with good people with consistent good paying gigs genre is unimportant to me.

What is your take on pay?
My position regardless of the circumstance is you should get an equal cut.
Blue | I was in a 4 man band, we split the pay 5 ways. I got the extra portion. I booked everything, but that wasn't really the issue. I also owned the PA lock, stock & barrel. The extra portion was so that nobody else had to mess with the PA when stuff broke etc. Everybody did help move it in/out of the venue though. It was their suggestion, mostly so they could remain hands off. That seemed fine to me
