Etude for Audition?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an audition coming up for a cruise line gig and they want an etude. I don't practice etudes on my bass, I practice bass lines, transcriptions, and maybe some exercises. What are they looking for as an electric bass etude? Any suggestions? Thanks

My guess they want to see some proof that you are a serious bass player and disciplined. They may also want to see some exhibition of technique that is beyond what basslines normally require.

I would think something like a movement from one of the Bach Cello suites would be good. Or, find a trombone study book and learn one of those etudes.

Here are two violin etudes by Rodolphe Kreutzer. Kreutzers etude book is used a lot by violinists.

Violin Etude no.2
Violin Etude no.3

dude...seriously bone up on your sight reading chops. I went to a carnival cruise line audition, needless to say I tanked cause my sight reading wasn't up to snuff like it used to be. Think high school/college jazz band notated type charts and being able to play them note for note within a couple minute look over. Good luck on the audition. Sweet gig to get.

Also, there is a book called Bach for Bass that has some great "Etudes" transcribed to bass.

Thanks for the help, I used a bach invention on a college audition once, it went well. I talked to the guy doing the audition, and he said he just wants to see something technical because the sight reading isn't that difficult. So I think I'm going to learn Donna Lee. It's going good so far, I never realized what a hip tune it actually is. I used to think it was just a bunch of "look how many notes I can play fast" type of song, but its a great melody.

Man, don't do Donna Lee. Everyone does Donna Lee. Learn Confirmation instead. Way harder, and sounds way nicer.
