Here's our wrap-up for the night. It's Freebird, of course, and most of the time, you can barely see the band. These people were into it. This is not a promotional video, but it gives you a great idea of how we're tightening up. My excuse for the D I botch on the 12-string is that I was playing near the door to outside, and my fingers got cold. I wish I could say I was drunk, but I do not drink.

Sounds good mellowinman and the first time I listened to Free Bird all the way through in many years. I know the recording is not great and on my laptop I couldn't notice the guitar mistakes too much but it did seem to me like sometimes your drummer really likes to ride those ride cymbals maybe just a little too hard. Other than that, top notch.

I have to wonder if sometimes you think you're hearing ride cymbal when you're hearing the chiming of the acoustic 12-string. They sound a lot alike on this vid. The actual ride is louder, and he's usually doing double time on it. Seems like he used it pretty sparingly, actually.

OK, he did go to it a bit right at the end, but compared to our last drummer, he didn't milk it too bad.

The only guitar mistake I was talking about was the very first D chord I play. I almost edited that, but then I thought, "NAH."

Probably just from trying to listen without decent speakers. It was toward the end mostly and sounded like a lot of ride cymbal noise and also at times maybe just a bit aggressive with the crashes too. Probably just sounded that way to me because the drums were very loud in the mix on my laptop. Maybe I'm just a little overconscious of ride noise too because my guitar player and I just made our drummer retire this ginormous ride he liked. This thing was the biggest ride I've ever seen! He thought it was bitchin', we thought it was a never-ending cacophony of noise.

I really wish the guy playing slide had a better sense of pitch. Gets rough at times.

Well, keep in mind, he is tuned to pitch, and that part is usually played in open tuning. Arthur just gets better all the time. We are his first band, and he was 19 when he joined, about 4 years ago.

He is taking on the guitar parts of three guys in that song, so I'm actually pretty impressed with him.

I think you definitely have a point. I hate ride cymbals, for the most part. They remind me of old style fire engines. He also brought out a cowbell this show, and had not used it at our first show with him, or in practice.

There has to come a point when I stop being anal, and appreciate the good things. Beat-wise, he was dead on, in my estimation, and he played all the correct changes and riffs. He and Krystal were like glue through the whole ending, and I felt like I was right there with them on acoustic. It's a whole lot of fun to play like that, and so far, I'm not reading any criticisms that argue any of that. This song is a big deal to me, and I always want it better.

It's one of those songs that you just shouldn't play if you're not getting it right.

That is my wife, Krystal. She is our #1 Bass Player. I am our #2.

For the most part, she can smoke me, but I am a little more funky, and take more chances.

I bought her that Ibanez. She always played a Washburn that I just hated before that.

I hear what you're saying, but out of tune is out of tune. The audience won't care what tuning he's in, they'll just know that something's "off." He's missing the tonic on some of those parts enough to make my teeth cry....

Second, TOMMY CANNOT PLAY.

That's right, Tommy has as much business behind a kit as I have in a male stripshow. Maybe even less. At least I have a shot at milking it for laughs.

He is all over the place, ahead of the beat; behind the beat; pretty much anywhere but ON the beat, and Krystal is actually flipping him the bird from time to time, and both of us are considering KILLING HIM.

Of course, the entire place is up on their feet, mobbing the stage, and screaming with adoration at Tommy's big debut on drums.
Well, you know, he plays a mean pinball. But the whole deaf dumb and blind thing makes it difficult to play dums well. Naturally, the disciples who lead him in love it anyway.

There's a place for sit-in vocalists...it's called the Karoke bar.

Drummers...wow, you never know til they get behind the kit. Always a risk, but in this case the crowd sentimentality was going to be with him no matter what so no harm no foul. It's going to be very difficult for any drummer to be tight first time with a band...that is for sure.

I thought it sounded really good. Seems like you have a good thing going on.

Were you the singer? You have a good voice and your guitarist was definitely doing a good job at the 3-guitar freakout in that song.

Most of all though, the whole band seemed to know the song and were each supporting/carrying it instead of waiting for someone else to remember where you were in the song. IME, that's way less common of a thing than I might think.

Too funny. We are going through this with our drummer. He's good, but also loves his ride too much. The freq of the damn ride drowns out the guitar and vocals big time. The guitarist and I keep trying to get him to just play his high-hat when the vocalist is singing.
