first official practice tomorrow: what to expect?

Sign in to disble this ad
let me give you some background:
my friend seth, whom ive known for about 5 years, finally got some people together. were going for a power metal/lighter metalcore sound, with some thrash elements mixed in. seth plays guitar, and weve jammed together quite a few times. so we know each other playing styles well. our keyboardist, mike, i went to an elementary school summer thing with, but havent talked to in years. our drummer, joe, ive met a few times. he plays drums in 2 other bands as well. justin, our other guitarist, i have never met at all. so i dont really know anyone well except for seth. joe is an amazing drummer from what ive been told, justin is supposedly a good singer and bassist as well (may cause some conflict ), and mike has some anger issues and other problems. im not sure how things are going to work out. are arguments at a first practice an indicator of things to come, or what? im not exactly all that nervous, but id like to know if i should be, and what i should be prepared for

and ive been playing in my churches band for a while, and ive had a few jam sessions with a drummer. so i know how to play in a group well enough to put me where i need to be tomorrow

You need a bigger amp. You will lost in the mix if your current amp is the one in your profile.

a bigger amp is on my list. its a 65 watt, so it gets loud enough. but seth is only playing with a 15 watt practice amp he got with his first guitar. so if anyone needs to worry about being lost in the mix its him. thankfully any gigs we may play (even though i neednt worry about that at this point in time) will be mic'd

Does the drummer play an electronic kit? If not you are in for a surprise.

no, he doesnt. but like i said, a bigger, better amp is on my list, and ive played with drummers before. last time i did, i was at my friend toms using his 100 watt crate combo. the volume wasnt really up that high, and he (standing 15 feet away on the opposite side of the drummer said he didnt have a problem hearing me. ill just wait until tomorrow before i decide things

You can't hear me with 300w going into a 2x10 8ohm cab in a moderately-loud rock-band setting.

Since it's going to be metal, probably with a loud drummer, you're going to need more balls.

It'll be fun, with a 15w guitar amp and all.

For the sound, make sure the amps are as close to ear level as possible. Easier to hear, cuts down volume.

Do you have 4 or 5 songs that everyone had learned already? If not, you'll most likely be standing around asking "what songs do you know". Or trying to teach the other guys the parts.

Who's the leader? Are you and Seth auditioning the other potential members? Be sure and allocate some time for a meeting. You need to find out if everyone is on the same page as far as musical goals, time available for rehearsal, team players, etc.

It sounds like it should be you guy's band.

Here's a few links that might help you out: (Take a close look as the first link)

were not doing anything for vocals yet. we havent really decided whos doing them either. probably me, seth, and justin mainly, i dont know. seth and justin are in their schools choir, so they know what their doing. i could at least do backup or whatever. its mainly seths band, since hes the one who found everything
i dont want to sound like a glory hog, but i come in 2nd since me and him have had the idea to start a band for years and weve been friends longer than he has with anyone else in the band. i have a song written that i recorded and sent to everyone via a mas facebook message. i know seth has some ideas. from what im predicting, its probably just going to be one of those get-to-know-each-other-and-their-playing-styles kind of days

1st practice tomorrow and you've got nothing to play...

Yes your going to be standing around a lot .

jamming is ok to see if you all know how to play, but you need some songs to play.

BTW 65watts should be ok for starters. Good practice amp size.

lower volumes are a better way to play together (very unforgiving).

Save the noise for the gigs

things went pretty well. played fear of the dark by maiden, and a bunch of other random crap wel just pulled out on the spot. sounded pretty cool. everyone seems to like each other, and they all seem serious about the whole thing. were aiming for another one thursday
