Fresh to the music business?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey TB,

Sorry if this has already been addressed, but I didn't find anything so far.

My question is, what are some tips to getting started in the music business? I've found help for auditioning and so forth, but how do you actually get started finding those connections and such?

Say if there's a drummer or bassist for example, playing for 10 years, young, and no actual experience, how would you go about if you wanted to join a gigging band relatively quick? Visit open mics? Classifieds?

Thanks in advance!

-Don

Those are good starts. Having good connections helps too. Anything can lead to a connection, so if its an opportunity dont pass it up!

As I have heard, almost 90% of the music business is luck and timing.

Pound feet and make contacts. Post ads, hit open mic nights, friends, family, CL, whatever works. Your going to have to sift through some garbage most likely, but there's something to be learned from even the worst experiences.

While connections and luck are important, one shouldn't downplay the importance of ability and versatility. I would wager that most musicians who are making a living, do not depend on a single line of income such as a cohesive band. They are also subbing, teaching, recording, etc. This takes chops and "dues paying" experience.

What are some Classified resources that you would recommend?

I've used Craigslist for a little bit, and Harmony Central just now, but they don't have a single ad in the whole area except for mine just now.

Thanks!

Personally, I would say go to places where musicians either shop, hang out, or play. Sam Ash, Guitar Center, coffee shops, bars, etc. Places where your banners will be seen.

You already have a big up on the competition of other musicians... Youre a bassist, sad to say but good for us, a dying breed.

Try going out and watching other bands perform. Talk to audience members and see who else plays and see if you could share a night or be an opening act. Talk to the band when they are done. See if you could give them a demo and ask them if they wouldn`t mind you opening for them once or twice for some exposure.

Be friendly and easy to access - that alone should help you get your foot in the door.
