Getting gigs

Sign in to disble this ad
What would the best way be for my band to get gigs at clubs ect? We are only just leaving high school the this is the first serious band we have all been in. We where thinking of producing a demo cd and sending them to venues along with a letter stating that we are interested in doing a gig, is this a good idea or are we better off talking to people face to face or on the phone?

Cheers

i'm in a similar situation to you, and if my band ever gets serious (i hope they will but looks like we'll need a new singer first) i'm not sure how i'll promote us. Try sending a demo to a local radio station; if they play it that's a lot of free publicity.

Sending out demo CD's is a waste of time and money. Set up a website or myspace and send people to that if they want to hear you. The reality is, is that most clubs could really care less what you sound like as long as you bring people in and don't drive people away.

Here are your options.

1. Call clubs directly and ask them about booking. They will tell you what they are looking for and what the have available and will tell you what are their requirements.

2. Call local promotors/talent agencies. Many clubs go through promotors and talent agencies and you won't get gig there unless you go through the talent agency.

3. Find lame multiband gigs where you won't get paid jack, but there might be decent crowd because of their being 4+ bands.

4. Myspace local bands with a following and let them know you are willing to open for them for little or no pay. Bands are always looking to fill time.

5. Go to jam nights. Clubs often use jam nights an an audition for a club.

P.S. if you are an all orginal band and your area is not hot on originals for clubs don't expect to get many gigs unless you are already somehow have a huge following.

O, and if you can tell a club you can bring in 200+ people guaranteed, then you can basically play almost any club you want if you can guarantee it.

Exactly.

Make a Myspace page. Put your songs on it. Start messaging bands and venues about playing shows. Send add requests like there's no tomorrow.

I've now booked shows in 4 different states, almost entirely through Myspace.
