More updates. We've had two rehearsals and so far so good--except we don't have a drummer.

This might be a subject for another thread, or possibly has been covered in another thread, but anyone else have trouble starting a band and finding a drummer? And do you have any suggestions on how to find one?

What I suggest is to record a workable demo using a hired-gun drummer if necessary. Once you're gigging, then start recording your gigs, and then you can rearrange your demo to include more live material.

I've been trying to get my band to record some demo. It's an efficient way to get exposure.

My band is in a similar situation. We have done three gigs with a drummer (I've only played on five). They band has done acoustic work and played quite a bit, but never did a demo, they had some people remix stuff though. We are forking over $800 for two days in a decent little studio to do a 3 track demo in hopes of adding to our one sheet.

For press, you have to have a demo or some place to find your music online. A decently quality demo can mean more tweeter followers, facebook likes, and attendance at shows (plan on using our little demo as an incentive for presale tickets). I thinks really just a great way to sell your band and build towards that next business step.

This. We're almost done with a four song demo using a Pro Tools rig obtained for cheap (thank you CL), a Sure SM 57 and a Blue Condensor. All this stuff total was less than $400

What I've heard so far sounds great.

id say demo. there are so many ways for bands to promote themselves than before. with the right apps or software, you can make a decent recording. sites like soundcloud, reverbnation, etc make it easy to post recorded material, and if youre really creative, having a youtube account can also get your music out there, whether you film a music video, or simply play the track with a single photo of the band or the logo. add a band site/facebook page, you can build a following before even playing a gig. if you can stay in time and in key and draw an audience, you can get a gig.
