Guitar and bass tunings?

Sign in to disble this ad
Okie so i just started my 3rd band of, theirs me on bass, and my 2 freinds on guitar. Now i was wondering wether it matters what tuning they use? Obviously they(C or B standard) can just play higher up the neck to get the same notes as me (standard) but would it sound horrible and limit us as a band?

Not at all sure what you're asking here. If they play an A440 and you play an A440 you're good. Doesn't matter where on the neck you find it.

Are you the lead instrument (like some funk music) or the support? In the support role I'd recommend focusing on playing the same notes as them, that is, supporting the notes they play. If that means retuning your bass to a different key, so be it. A440 is still A440, like RustyAxe said.

Doesn't matter, just makes it confusing when you ask what not they're playing.

Hint: Trumpets have to play a C to be the same as a Bb on a piano. ALto saxes playing a C is the same as an Eb played on a piano.

Altered tunings are common in other instruments. Doesn't matter, as long as everyone plays the right notes, and knows how to transpose when the other instrument tells them what note they're playing.

And also remember that you don't always have to use the root but can go for one of the other notes within the chord without sounding off-key.
(I.E.: The guitars playing the A-Major chord while the bass plays either an E or a C#)

All great advice. I was in a band where I played in 5 string standard tuning and the guitars played in drop B. Now in my case, all of the songs were very easy so I was able to get away with it a lot easier. When i say very easy, if the riff contained 6 notes you were pushing the guitarists limit.
