Had the first practice with new 'band'

A little history:

I've been working on my MBA for the last few years so I haven't had time to be in a band. I've still been practicing/going to private lessons. But I never had the time to commit to a band because of school.

That all ended in June when I got my MBA. I promised myself that I would look for another group to play with and got frustrated when it seemed that all the bands in the Los Angeles area where located in North Hollywood (which is an hour drive for me without traffic).

Last week I noticed an ad on craigslist for a couple of guys doing classic/southern rock covers in Moorpark (Which is my town). I called them up to see what they were about.

They were older guitar playing cats (in their 50's- I am 28) and they were playing at a house that was 5 minutes from mine.

The music isn't quite what I am into- I am more of a funk/jazz/grunge rocker type guy but I thought it was important for me as a bass player to get these classic covers learned.

So I had a week to learn:
Sweet Home Alabama
Gimmie Three Steps
La Grange
Waiting for the bus
Jesus left Chicago
Wind Cries Mary
All along the watch tower
The Core (Clapton)
Stormy Monday (Allman Brothers version)

I was a little intimidated by Gimmie Three steps but I had the other songs down pretty good by the end of the week. I'll probably have Gimmie Three Steps done by the next practice.

The guys were pretty cool- they had the usual Guitar related issues (tuning, strings breaking, adjusting their amps/pedals/cables, etc...). Once we got rolling I really enjoyed myself and felt great to be back playing with people again. We got through everything in a few hours and they said they liked playing with me. They even asked my advice a few times about changes and chord progressions.

I know a really talented drummer and singer so this might take off if I can get everyone together.

Just wanted to share with everyone :-) To be able to play with another group of people in So Cal that doesn't involve 1+ hours of driving is pretty rare.
