I've been tossing around this idea for the past couple years of starting a band that plays oldies songs in the style of punk. I know it's not really an original idea, but I think it would be fun. The idea first came to me when my old band in high school played the ending of Last Kiss with a faster, power chord and distortion laden ending. It went over surprisingly well with the people we played it in front of. The idea sat on the back burner until I heard The Misfits Project 1950 CD then I really wanted to try it out. Now that I'm laid off I figured it would be a good time killer while searching for a new job. So basically I just want to know if anyone here has tried it out and how it went over with an audience.

i've played a few tunes that way. i think it's a great idea. there is nothing so satisfying than to take a cover song and completely revamp it into a different style and do it in a way that sounds great. i say go for it!

Sorta like the bluegrass arrangements of rock tunes, especially Pink Floyd covers.

depends on the area. If doing it for self gratafication rock on. If doing it for commerial porpuses thats a narrow audience.

I've done more than a few punk covers of improbable tunes (Cher's "Gypsies, Tramps, & Thieves," Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," etc.). It's good fun, but I wouldn't rely on it to put food on the table.

Yeah, that's kinda why I wanna do it. I mean anyone can cover any song, but to revamp it takes a little more effort.

It would definitely be more for enjoyment. If I make money from it, cool. Yeah, it'd be nice to make some extra cash but I'm more the type that plays to have fun. In my area, cover bands are a dime a dozen and they all generally play the same stuff. I figure my idea would be a nice break from the monotonous cover bands.

I've heard of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Stumbled upon them when I started getting into NOFX since I know Fat Mike is in it. I've been working on a list for the same time that I've been thinking about it. I've got about 30 songs on the list right now and I've been working on revamping them with Guitar Pro since I have yet to find people who really want to give it a try.
