Have you gotten into physical altercations with bandmates ? I did a bit in my youth with my best bud at the time. Metal brought out alot of anger between us.

There were only 3 of us at the time and we played pretty well together. One day this other guitard shows up and he looks 80's metal all the way. I was cool with that.
A few months later the band wants to go into a different direction. I wanted to continue going the DRI, Suicidal Tendencies route but they wanted to go the Tesla, Motley Crue route. I would play my riff and the other dude would start shredding some stupid arpeggio riff and the drummer was soooo pleased with the spandex-laden freak. Finally one day I was tuning up during a rehearsal break and they started playing some dumb ballad by Motley Crue. I just started laughing and saying how dumb that was. The drummer got up in my face and threatened me so I grabbed him by the throat and slammed him into the wall behind him. By then the bassist, who was still cool to me, pulled me off of him while the new guy almost started crying. I just grabbed my gear and left, never to play with those idiots again.

And we had a tenor sax guy once who wanted to beat me up at the end of our first set one night, but I legged it to the beach and hid, so instead he pulled the door off an ice machine and beat the DJ's bike to death with it.
Oh and a singer from another band once tried to punch me in the face for smoking in the dressing room, but he missed and hit the wall instead, and had to go to hospital to get his hand looked at.
I must just have one of those faces. |

Cheers,
Jim

| | Lone Wolf and Renagade Miner | | | | | I once subbed for a band in the late eighties for a 5 nighter and during that 5 night run I wittnessed the guitard player getting friendly with the drummers woman one night and then the lead singer getting busy with the same girl on a different night. Then it all came to a head on the last night of the run of gigs. The guitard player walked out on stage just before the first note was hit and was struck by a full case of 2b drum sticks in the side of the face and as he went to the ground the singer got smacked with a gig bag full of drum things.I stood there in complete shock as the drummer walked up to me and gave me his card just in case I knew anyone looking for a fill in.

I didn't take advantage of his sloshed state and took his pushing me, finally though I had enough and pushed him back and he fell down and broke his ankle and screamed like a little girl.
Don't hang out with the guy anymore he had issues. |

Two girls started argueing and the next thing I know they started ripping each others T-shirts off. They were ripping handfuls of hair out of each others head, the bouncers wouldn't even try to get in between them, the Hampton police finally showed up and maced them.
Ahh, the memories of some of the dives I played in. |

I think the statement that prompted it was setlist/songwriter related, and I said something along the lines of, "this isn't the (insert name) solo project."

I'm always in bands with people I consider brothers-in-arms and really only associate with mature people anyway. Even when I played in a metal band!

So you mean the Crue wrote for Broadway musicals and Liza Minelli?

Keep your prejudices to yourself.
As to the topic at hand, I've gotten into physical altercations with bandmates but never during "band" related encounters -- actually I guess I was threatened by an unstable lead singer once, but he didn't have the pair to bring it -- and not since I've been of voting age. I haven't cared about any of the projects I've done since then nearly as passionately. |

I wouldn't stay in a band with a violent person. Any incident, whatever the "reason", would mean my last night with the band. Or his. There's no excuse for it.

But I was once accused that I "walk into the rehearsal with an attitude like you want to have a fight". Before I could interject properly, his next sentence cutting me off was "because if you want, we can pal, I'm up for it". This drew a huge "Hey, hey hey that's not gonna fly here!!!" from another member (used to seeing these displays).
I was 34 when this happened (still am until March), and this guy was in his 40's!
Despite my curiousity in testing over 12 years of martial and fighting arts in the "one on one, duel environment" they are best applied to, I declined his offer to fight and chose to quit his band instead.

If I even get near the idea of needing to settle a dispute by physical means it's time to rethink (i.e. quit) the project.
