Health affecting my performances?

Sign in to disble this ad
Recently I've began to have concerns for my health, including an ongoing hearing trouble and a problem with flashing and moving images.
The main concern is that these will stop me from joining a gigging band later on, or that I will be compromising performances because of them. I am also with a band nowand I am afraid that I may be compromising any work I do with them (I have a regular performance booked each week plus band practice) .

1 How should I go about sorting this out with my present band? Should I ask for special provisions or should I continue as normal? The band has 3 bassists including me, so there is some cover, and we work on a rota system.
2 How do I go about sorting this if I was to join a gigging band? Should I mention it before an audition or should I include it in my music profile or a letter?

Has anyone out there got a similar problem or have a band member in the same position as me?
Any help appreciated!

Do you already know the cause of these problems? If not, you need medical attention ASAP. Such problems could be caused by many things. Trauma, exposure to neurotoxins (chemical or biological), metabolic problems, tumors are just a few possible causes. Many things are treatable and possibly cureable. Please put your health first.

Peace,

What have your doctors said? Really, that's the first thing you should be focusing on -- go see enough doctors until you get a handle on exactly what's going on, then find out what THEY think about your band participation.

I must add that I have been 'cleared' by an audiologist and I really now don't want to be wasting any more of my band's time- I've been off-rota now for a month and isn't fair on me or the other two bassists.

Hi, Fassa

Everyone has some health issues, some minor some major. For me it's somewhat major at the moment, but with a careful planning things work out.

Last weekend we played a show (3*45) where I did all the vocals as well as played bass, as a while ago our singer decided that he didn't want to play with us any more. As I have sarcoidosis in its early stages (ankles and lungs) it was a bit hard and exhausting for me, but the crowd made it all worthwile. IMO all You need to know is Your limits and NOT to cross 'em, because then You can be in a heap of trouble.

My advice is to work it out with Your doc and go from there. I wouldn't want to give up anything enjoyable and relaxing for health issues, be it music, sports, anything that has mental advantages.

Quite a few years ago my right ear went stone deaf after a MC accident (U-turn, "Didn't see You" type of an accident) and I quit all of my sound engineering and band activities for several years. The WORST desicion I've ever made now when I look back.

Hope it all works out for the best for You.

Sam
