I love NYE gigs - people are so happy and drunk that everything you play sounds brilliant. I'm playing at a party of a rather wealthy friend (and musician). I've played the same gig for the last 4 years, and there's always at least 3 bands and lots of musicians who get up to jam. Last year over 200 people turned up - it's become a big tradition in the area (a semi-rural town). He pays us well, but frankly, I'd be happy to do it for free as I wouldn't want to be anywhere else on New Year's Eve.

I am deeply conflicted about New Year's Eve gigs. Until I get paid, and then I feel fine about them. Stop by if you're in the neighborhood.

Well, for the first time, I'm putting any charts, cheat notes, chord progressions and other crap onto my iPad to get me through this gig. It's actually pretty useful for that purpose - no need to cram loads of stuff on to one piece of paper or worry about lighting, etc.

Maybe the iPad isn't quite the worthless bit of modern day paraphernalia I thought it was when I got it.

You should check out the Animoog App. It's fantastic.

Yup...I'm workin' New Year's Eve too. Formal event at the Sheraton downtown. Three course meal included. Not quite as fruitful as previous years, but a very good take none the less.

A few years ago I did a triple!! That was crazy.

Anytime someone hires real live musicians instead of iPod jockeys it's a good thing!!!

I was lucky enough to do a very prestigious Christmas corporate gig at our International Convention Centre where they fed us like that with the full works between sets. That second part of the gig was hard to play with a big bellyful of seasonal fodder!

Love that 6th slide on Soul Man. Dedicate the song to Donald.

hey look, songs that need some real bass playin'!

anyway, sounds like it should be a hoot, and +1 to "amateur night" referring to the audience, not the band! people out drinking who aren't "good at it", causing trouble in the bars and on the roads.

st. paddy's day is the other big one for that over here.

Yeah, I know what the score is in those respects for sure - one of the hazards of being out on those nights. But over the years I've had more fun out of it than trouble overall. I would guess the same is true for most of us veterans.

I was thinking about Donald quite a bit while getting ready for this gig, what with all the old soul numbers and the Blues Brothers stuff. Time to pay my dues again...

Good luck, mate - but you'll get through it. I've done gigs more or less dead on my feet with illness before, as I'm sure many of us have at some point.

Do you have one of those iPad contraptions to affix it to an amp stand?

I had about four different New Year's Eve gigs lined up which were all cancelled. I think I'm supposed to play some gypsy jazz at a restaurant.

Why did they get cancelled? What kind of gigs were they?

Best of luck with the gig Bill. Tried to find a good 'scumbag brain' meme for you...something along the lines of 'knows every song inside out and back to front....turns fingers into numb sausages'

Lets just hope you aren't cursed with an audience that claps on the 1 and 3...

Nope, I'm just putting it on a regular music stand for now.

(YIKES - a music stand on stage! I will look like a total hack and be unable to entertain anyone in the audience because of the insurmountable physical barrier! )

Depends on the setting and the crowd and more importantly you. If your fine with using a music stand then it's perfectly fine.

Actually, I meant a mic stand but the answer would still be the same.

Personally, I don't see an issue with a music stand on stage. Especially, if you're not the front person.
