I don't think folks in the audience even notice whether you have a stand or not if you're doing a good job.

the lead singer of my former band used to use a music stand and then switched to an IPAD that attaches to his mic stand. having observed the band both ways while friends sat in on bass for a tune, I think the music stand was actually less noticeable and distracting then the IPAD contraption.

TOTALLY approved ! I recently succeed in an audition and I had to practice something compltely different that I'm used too, as playing with a pick.

Next gig in early February, 5/6 dates yet booked (they were waiting for a new bassist before booking anything more), I'm fine !!

The music stand is old technology so it wasn't a novelty on stage. The iPad is new and sticks out b/c of it. In a few years, it probably won't be noticeable.

Yep, your goose is cooked - might as well just sell your gear and quit...

Set it off to the side instead of in front of you and just glance at it when you need to. The only people who will judge you for that don't know what they're talking about anyway. If I played in one of those cover bands that play 3 hour sets with a binder full of material that rotates out I'd have no shame bringing some notes with me that at least had the key and maybe some Memphis numbering if I tend to forget a progression or two

Just got in from my NYE gig at about 3 AM. Really enjoyed it, fun set with a good band of young guys. The crowd loved it.

I was stationed right next to the drummer on stage and managed to sort of maneuvre my iPad on its stand underneath one of his crash cymbals so it wasn't directly in front of me. Very discreet, in fact. I doubt whether anyone in the audience even noticed it. I'd got a mixture of hints and cheats on there to get me through the set - some scribbled notes, some chord charts, some dots - a bit of everything really. I'd put it all in a PDF in set order and was able to just swipe through from screen to screen when I actually needed it (document navigation is really easy using the free iBooks app with PDFs). I only had to refer to it for about a third of the tunes, but it was useful nonetheless. I'm going to start using it a lot more, I think.

Thank goodness that barrier didn't stop the audience from enjoying themselves.

I had a great NYE's gig, though I'm paying for it today. I must have played for 5 hours at least, with lots of different musicians, including a couple of heavy hitters. Lots of fun (and we didn't play "Mustang Sally", not even once).

I just got home from two 4 hour bar gigs.

Lots of fun, for me there is no better way to spend New Years Eve.

Happy New Year

I even woke up next to a woman whose name I actually remembered, and spent a couple of hours talking with her, and I really dig her. That's rather refreshing for a New year's eve gig. Or maybe I'm just getting old?

how so?

was it that he had to mess with it more between songs? did he have to look more closely at it during songs?

It would be kinda diffcult to mess that one up, wouldn't it? Not to mention embarrassing.

Strangely enough, in 35 years as a gigging bassist I never had to play this tune until about a year ago.

Happy New Year ya'll!!! I had a great NYE gig last night. Originals showcase gig, five bands. We were fourth, and went on right at midnight. Crowd was fantastic. Place was packed and appreciative. And we had the most dancers of any band.

awesome!

in any bill with more than 2 or 3 bands, the next-to-last slot is always best; folks are burnt out by the time the last band goes on.
