Words of wisdom there. We've actually had the conversation within the band of "We need to stop headlining shows". It sounds counter-intuitive to some people, but unless you're in a town that never sleeps, a lot of people are ready to scram around midnight even on Fridays.

It used to be different in the 80's, but it's true enough now. People seem to go home a lot earlier. I'm not sure why that is - personally, when I go out to see bands, I stay until "last call".

I had my iPad on the stand at about the same height that I'd use for sheet music. I could probably have set it quite a bit lower. I formatted the pdf of the set notes so that it could be read that way. And it was positioned at my side rather than directly in front of me (under one of the crash cymbals, as I said). Very unobtrusive. Here's a pic of that side of the stage so you can play "Spot the iPad".

Not to mention the drum kit. How's anybody expected to rock out and engage with an audience when they're sat down behind there? Unpossible!

Actually, I think it's on top of your amp.

Yup. You can see where my (matt black ninja) stand is by the edge of my rig. But I put the iPad on top of the amp when we weren't actually playing so it wouldn't get knocked off the stand by bandmates walking past. I'd forgotten this until I looked really closely after posting the pic.

But I'm sure you can see that the way things were set up, it was pretty unobtrusive.

Is that a factor that affects people in the US more now than it did in the 80s? Even back then, drink driving was a complete no-no over here for almost everybody. There's no way I'd risk my licence driving home from a gig, but that would have been just as true even in the 1970s as it is today.

The U.S. is about 20 years behind Europe on a few legal matters. Drunk driving is one of them. It is much more of a social and legal taboo these days.

Wow. Thanks for the input.

I have on some occasions heard a few folks express what sound to me like very "old-fashioned" opinions on this topic. I just thought it was a few dinosaurs that would never catch up. I didn't realise that different attitudes to this were widespread.

You stay because you're a musician and actually give a crap. Most people going to bar gigs absolutely couldn't care less about the band on stage (unless you're playing one of those music bars. We have one in town and unfortunately it loses out to the DJ with an Apple laptop playing pre-recorded dubstep or hiphop that he didn't write, with a "turntable" in front of him that he doesn't use and studio headphones around his neck that he never actually wears, at all the rest of the dime-a-dozen cookie cutter bars down the road).

Young girls like listening to that electronic stuff / what the radio tells them to hear that's playing next door to the bar you're playing at, and guys are going there to pick up those girls. Those people will stay out until 2 or 3AM. Since all the "bros" and whatnot are at those bars, the older crowd is all that's left to come into your bar. They leave earlier because....well, it's the older crowd.

Win over a female audience and you win the male audience.

Had a fantastic NYE gig with my originals band Dick Venom & The Terrortones, supporting the awesome Vince Ripper & The Rodent Show.

A very messy night was had by all these photos of our set show:

So, no pressure at all then.
Ha ha! Just heard some of the results of this "session". Not bad at all - better than I thought we had a right to expect, anyway, considering it was totally out of the blue from my point of view. It will do for their website okay, I think. Sounds like I got away with blagging my way through this one. Phew.

So are you 'in' the band, or do they have their very own Hugh McDonald/Daryl Jones?

No, their regular bassist is still with them. But I'm happy to stand in again if asked. And it's me on all their new demo material.
