Don't wait. Tell them now that the name sucks (it does). Not the worst I've heard, but it has no redeeming value, so I say change it quickly and completely. Screw trying to modify it. Why? With no "name recognition" there's no value in keeping "part" of a bad name. That's like, "hey, I got this Yugo, I'll just put a Mustang engine it and it will be cool". No. You are just ruining the good part by associating it with the bad part.

If they insist on keeping a crappy name, they are not a band you want to play with, because they will continue to make crappy decisions like that through the "career" (or lack thereof) of the band.

I think one of the coolest band names I have seen...actually two of them were, "The Bastard Sons Of Johnny Cash" and The Rehabeneros".

That's what I was thinking. We used to call them, "New Skids On Your Jocks".

Make someone else that bad guy. Get a hold of one of your areas more popular club owners or the editor of your local music rag. The other band members will view outside suggestions with higher regard.

The worse the better. How about Kinks, or Rolling Stones or Beatles. Oh yeah those have been taken already.

The worse the name better it sticks, just make sure you play really well.

Did a pick up gig for a band needing a fill in for the night and much to my embarrassment and chagrin found out the name of the band was "forced pleasure". I played good but hung my head low and got oout of dodge as quickly as I could

It really is a terrible name, and since the band is unknown, I'd just tell them - a band is a collaborative thing, so you should have a say in everything. Spend some time and try to come up with some other names first, but the name has to go, no doubt about it. I'd be surprised if at least one of the other band members doesn't hate the name too, so perhaps you could mention it to them individually and maybe you'll find an ally.

Is the band a tribute act that specializes in heavy metal versions of New Kids On The Block songs? If so, it's a perfect name. Otherwise, not so good.

But you don't have a position to suggest a change until you have been around a while.

Butthole Surfers, Meat Puppets, etc., are so bad they're cool. But "The Hideous New Kids" isn't bad, it's lame.

I really don't see what's so bad about it. People way over think band names, IMHO.

What? That's actually a really good band name for that kind of thing. It's clever but at least somewhat subtle enough that people might not pick up on it. I mean, sure it's goofy, but it's goofy in a fun way.

Also, "The Beatles" is a bad band name? That's news to me (and their hundreds of millions of fans). "Beat" was a big thing back then, and they used an interesting play on words to make it their own. Nothing wrong with Rolling Stones either. Kinks I could take or leave. Certainly, none of those is "actively bad" as the one in the OP is. And those are all LEGENDARY bands. If your band doesn't have John Lennon, Mick Jagger, or Ray Davies in it, you need to go with a name that's a little more safe and less likely to turn people off unnecessarily.
