Huey Lewis "Power of Love" as dance song? My guitarist wants to add this to our set list because he feels it will be a good '80's dance song. We are a wedding/corporate/ casino band and are asked for '80's music often. I guess I'm undecided on this one. Anyone use this song in their shows in their cover band? Thanks. |
It's syncopation and vocals make it a more complex tune than say "manic Monday" Its too risky for my setlist |
If you have the instruments to do it, go for it. It's a great song. Welcome to 2013, only two years away from 2015. Can't wait to see the fusion powered flying cars, hover-boards.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d68yRIE9OvQ |
I've played it pretty often and it worked just fine. I'm not quite sure if we play the same kind of shows (things might be different in your neck of the woods), but over here it's a great dance tune for a 30/35 plus audience. Can't go wrong IMO. |
I played it in a dance band when it was a new song and it worked very well. |
Yes...good tune, good bassline ..add it to the set |
Seems perfectly dance-able to me. And the bass line is the hook -- all the better. |
if my band played this it would sound like early devo ;) |
If you need 80s hits, and your marketing strategy depends upon giving your clients and patrons 80s hits, having a Huey Lewis hit on your playlist is not a bad idea. The question is, which one? There are several that were in the rotation for dance floor clubs back in the day, and "Power Of Love" is one of them. |
Depends on the crowd, I think- drunks will dance to ANYTHING. I'd expect it to do well most of the time though. |
I played it in an old band. Good tune but I wouldn't have chosen it. I have a video of it somewhere. Will post it if I can find it. |
3pc band? Your guitarist must be phenomenal. |

Worked very well in two different bands I have played it with - one 6 piece, one 22 piece. |
One band I was in played it all the time, but you need a good drummer to help get the feel right (we didn't, so it sounded kinda clunky, I thought). The bass part also requires some work to get the feel right. Otherwise skip it, it's not as easy to do as you might think. Worth a try, though, since it's a decent tune. |

My band was working on adding this to our setlist right before our last show. We practiced it a few times, was a good tune for our five-piece (2 guitars, keys, drums, bass). Keyboard picked up the horn parts. A lot of fun, but I found that the Huey Lewis stuff was harder to get really tight than I expected. It never did sounds quite right when we played it, seemed a tad sloppy. Working through a couple of their tunes increased my respect for them quite a bit, and I already liked their music. |
Huey Lewis is always a good idea. |
