Doesn't matter though, because this ordeal is over, our regular drummer is back for the next run, and I got a call from the agent today that we're booked for a week at a beach resort/amusement park/water park. Free admission all week, and a pretty good bit of money. No, it's not Six Flags

I deserve it. A lot.
Nice. After the last couple of days I had with my day job a week of gigs at a amusement part would do me good. I'd even deal with a dopey-assed drummer.

Because you also play bass.

Do you play in a band?!
Sorry I don't mean to sound abusive but that comment is immensly niave.

To paraphrase Chris Rock:

I know a bunch of first class number 1 bands in Detroit that do not condone pot smoking.
The band I'm currently in is smoking hot and does not condone any type of drug use.

We don't condone it either, but we're also not so autocratic that we dictate what can or can't be done with our free time.

Hasn't been an issue in any way thus far, but OTOH, it is clearly understood that if anyone shows up for rehearsal or a gig impaired, that will be the end of you with this band.

We travel too far for practice to have our time wasted, and if one of us jeopardizes our rep or potential income, they've become a liability that won't be tolerated.

Read first and last page, will come back for the rest. Very entertaining... I am supremely blessed w/a plethora(for me, meaning 3 or 4)of SUPERB drummers. I do have one extremely flakey BL/gtr/singer though- describing the unnecessary BS he has caused me and the rest of the band to swim through would require a separate and likely ban-worthy thread.
To the OP, good on ya for surviving and not beating said drummer

I read this entire thread back in October, and just read the new posts. I'm a little amused to see it come back to life. It seems the good ol' devil grass is a controversial subject.

I'm an avid fan of the herb, myself. But I'm also an adult, and I believe I indulge responsibly. I have noticed that, for me, weed and music don't mix. It messes with my groove (though not as badly as alcohol) and blows my concentration. I lose the form and sometimes completely space the progressions. Therefore it is my personal policy to play all gigs with a straight head.

I do think it's useful for writing sessions, though.

IMO, the problem is not the weed, it's the lack of personal responsibility on the part of certain musicians who insist on using music time as party time.

For those of you who insist that weed is always a problem, I suggest that there may be people in your life (musicians, co-workers, friends, relatives, even doctors, lawyers etc) who smoke, but do so in a responsible fashion, away from their responsibilities, and so you have no idea that they are smokers. Just like people who like a few cocktails after work, but know enough not to indulge in those cocktails before or during work.

This thread is hilarious. If band-mates started running to the cops every time one of them got high, Rock & Roll would come to an abrupt end. I doubt I've ever played a single gig where the whole band was substance free.

Sometimes a different perspective is needed. I'm a classically trained bassist, public school orchestra director, and wanna-be rock star.

Orchestral gigs pay well. They are professional and demand professionalism but are fair and enjoyable.

In my private studio I charge $80 per hour and demand a lot of my students and of myself. I will only take on 6 or less students per semester.

My public school job is demanding but provides a reasonable wage, health insurance, and retirement.

My rock band is fun but requires weekly rehearsals for which I'm not compensated for, recording time for which I've purchased gear and late night gigs. We are an all original band which makes things even more difficult.

I want each endeavor to be professional but sometimes the rock gig is frustrating!
