capncal makes an interesting point.....if you already know you're going to leave, it opens up an opportunity to do something funny and make a scene. then again, i'm warped. don't follow my advice, ever.

Why would you consider staying in that situation?

Move on. He wants one of his friends to have the bass chair. Not you. He's hoping you get the hint.

Every time I try and jam with him on one of his drum beats, he stops playing the second I join in. Suggestions?
why do you stay in such a band?

unless I made tons of money... and then it were my main source of income, I'd walk.

There are already enough crap you have to deal with playing gigs etc to also have a band with uncomfortable band members.

Find another band. It doesn't sound like yours is a happy place to be.

Then... there is only one way.

Make sure it looks like an accident

I don't know your level of experience, but I just clicked on your youtube link, and I love that track! Would love to be able to see your band live, it sounds like it would be energetic and fun!

I think you need to move on to another situation. This most likely will not be resolved, at least from what you have said I cant see it happening. One thing not stated, is this an original band or cover band? I play in a Doom/Death metal band (all originals). I have control of my bass lines, obviously I work with the drummer and guitarist when a new song is being written. We all take input/critisism from each other, that is how it should work. When the song requires me to only play on the 1 or 3 thats what I do. When it calls for me to double the guitar I do (although I try to stay away from this as much as possible). When I need to blister 16th notes and or triplets I do and on the rare occasion it calls for just a root note i do that as well.

What I am saying is when you find the right drummer and band members you will know it. You will not feel less than anyone else. You will feel like a contributing member and your music will show and reflect that.

Thanks for all the help guys, right now I'm taking in allow the information and trying to make the best decision. After my next practice ill tell you all how it goes...perhaps August burns red was a little too specific, I mean the kind of musicians that are just WAY too in love with playing breakdown after breakdown

I was in a similar situation some time ago, eventually the band folded and that was the end of it, I haven't seen any of those people in a long time. When I look back on it I get annoyed with myself for putting up with so much crap. Today, I would resist the temptation to shove a drumstick up his nose but I would tell him how I feel and walk.

I see two options:

New Drummer
or
New Band

It sounds like the OP has a bit of an ego as well. I'd leave the band and let them know why so hopefully they'll learn from this.

Then I would try to find another band. You don't need to be a prog master. Just a good bassist. Who cares if you're better than you need to be.

Ranking and ego are a younger man's game. It's will hurt you in the long run.

Well I pulled him aside, and asked him why he's such a jerk and why he hasn't been jamming. He said he had no idea he was coming off as a jerk and just "busting my chops" and said he was sorry and would stop. He's been very nice and we've been jamming ever since

LOL, now that's anti-climactic. Good on you both. Hopefully it lasts and you two develop a great musical (if not personal) relationship
