No musical soul in mind, just a paycheck. I still fill in when called, but that thing that is my musical soul was born in me many decades ago, and I carry it with me always. There are times to delve into it, and times not to. But, even on a gig I don't particularly get into (just for the dough), I can still just get into my technique, or tone, or something to do with articulation, whatever, in order to make it interesting. Never mind if I like the tunes, I'm in my own world. Then, get paid, say thank you, and go home. THEN and THERE (at home) I can make some music that moves me for real. However, nowadays I have many gigs in which I can do that very thing onstage. That's becuse I have chosen different paths lately. The dough is less, but the enjoyment is up. No time to waste at age 63 (come this Saturday).

Have you seen her lately? I saw her on TV not long ago... pretty weird watching a 60-something lady singing "Call Me."
"Cover me with kisses, baby"...?

"Nah..." | Yeah, I saw Blondie back in September. She looks a lot better when she's made up for the stage than she does in this pic, but I would definitely not say that she has aged gracefully. From what I can tell, she's lived a hard life. And by hard, I means drugs.

Right now, I couldn't be satisfied with a band that didn't treat it like life or death.
Also, there's the question of simple fairness. When a room is packed wall-to-wall with people who paid a cover charge and are buying drinks, isn't the VERY REASON those people are there worthy of compensation? |

After all of those years, there's still nothing like coming home after a long day at work and playing along to my favourite albums.
However, there's also nothing like getting up on stage and making people move with your music.
I don't play for the money at all (don't make anything from gigs with the band) but we only play about once a month, and I couldn't complain at all.
I have the opportunity to do something that I love, and I usually get some free drinks once I step of stage. Sounds like a good way to spend my weekends to me.. |

The only things my ol' lady ever says about my bass is:
"play something funky"
OR
"don't leave that thing laying on the couch". |

I was just watching The Magnificent Seven with the sound turned down while playing along with some CDs. Yeah, I'm married. When she's in there I submerge into the headphones.

| | | | I'm at a crossroads right now. I pretty much ONLY enjoy playing with other musicians. I get literally no joy from playing by myself, it feels too much like homework. But I also am sick of gigging, to the point where I really don't want to do that anymore. It's a lot of work for not much money, which didn't matter to me when I was in my early/mid 20s, it was just a fun night out. But now I have a family, and need a pretty good reason to stay out until 2am or later. Plus lugging all that **** around, setting up, and tearing down... no thanks. Too much work.
So unless I can find some guys that just want to play in a garage forever, I'm screwed. |

Hasn't aged well? REALLY????
For almost 70, she looks great. I can't believe any of you were dogging on her.
Here's a musician almost her same age:

My points were, A) matticus posted a picture of her from 30 years ago and said "Mmmmm." I agreed with Mmmmm.... 30 years ago, but now.... Not so much! Why is it wrong to post a current picture of a celebrity, and indicate that I don't find her that attractive??
And B) that I was amused and a little creeped out that this almost-70 year old lady was singing teeny-bopper "kiss me" songs. If YOU thin that's all right, if you're turned on by that, I have no problem with you. Don't know why you have a problem with me not being turned on by it...
And Keith Richards? Really? Is that supposed to mean that as long as she looks better than him, she's hot? Does it mean he looks good? Or bad? Not really sure what that picture represents....
LOL. |

I'll be 60 next month. I'm in a gigging cover band, I still enjoy the whole process from lugging gear, performing for 4 hours, tearing down gear and getting home at 3:00am.

I am lucky to be in two working cover bands and get out there 6-8 times a month. It's my part-time job, no really it is.
The extra 500-800 a month really helps out. gas for the cars, some grocery's maybe a Sunday brunch with the family...
It's the hobby that has turned into a paying skilled trade.

LOL. | Nothing at all wrong with your post.
It just seems like all anyone wants to do here on TB anymore is disagree , argue and try to "one up" each other.
It's getting old!
I'm finding that anymore I can only take Talkbass in small doses because of it. |
