Jazz Quintet name help

Hi everyone,
I've recently started university and joined a new jazz band. It's a quintet with sax, trombone, piano, drums and of course myself on bass.
Practices are going great and we've already played a couple of gigs, however we've ran into a little bump in the road when it came to naming the band...
Currently we are going with the "Pete Werner Quintet" after the sax player. The issue is this, I quote a message from our trombonist:
"Hey guys,
In a quartet with one horn player, its almost tradition to name the group after them, but in a larger group i'm not sure it works and its quite old fashioned. Not fresh.
Pete, this really is nothing at all against you at all, but if we want to make a name for ourselves we need to have something original"
Of course our sax player argues that naming a group after the lead is traditional and means we will be taken more seriously.
What do you guys think? We really want to get this right!!
Thanks for your opinions

The tradition is you name the group after the leader. That's not necessarily the sax player. Unless Pete is the clear-cut leader of the group, he has no right to insist on calling it the Pete Werner Quintet. And while it is usual for traditional jazz groups to be named for the leader, it's becoming more common with new, hip groups to abandon that concept (The Bad Plus, Garage A Trois, etc).

I must admit I do not know much about Jazz traditions. But on the other hand, I do know if you are in a band which is named after one of the members, you will never be considered an equal and will just be thought of as a side man. If your sax player wants the band named after himself and other member don't, you are already headed for drama and conflict. Good luck with that.

thanks for your comments guys, can I just add at this point that it was not actually pete who suggested we name the band after him, it was our pianist. I've spoken to pete and he says he doesn't mind what we call it :P some of us just think the pete werner quintet has a nice ring to it

I don’t like anyone’s name on it unless they OWN the band, as in they own everything, take care of all the business, and pay the players.

Unless Pete is a "name" in your neck of the woods, there is no advantage to naming your group after him. How about naming it after a fictional person?

Jazz is all about breaking tradition. Come up with something memorable, is my advice.

If you can't agree on a leader, replace the person's name with a geographical reference (for example, The South Bay Quintet or The Franklin Street Quintet).

Just a thought.

Five Go Jazz in Guernsey
Five for the Ferries
Saint Pierre Cinq

et cetera...

Shame you're not in Jersey - you could call yourselves Jersey Jazz.

Agreed 100%. Screw "tradition". The very notion that the genre of music that began as the music of the streets, and the very definition of challenge to authority, should now be hemmed in and regulated by "tradition" is absurd.

Give it a hip, memorable, modern name. Use your imagination.
