Losing A Singer

Sign in to disble this ad
We've been hosting a jam night that we get paid for, as a way of getting used to playing in front of people and to practice. At the outset, we all agreed that the money would go into a pool to pay for new equipment, in order to sound better at shows. Last week, our singer felt that he wasn't seeing any of the money, and we broke down where every penny had gone, seeing as we were keeping invoices. We left the meeting feeling that the matter had been resolved amicably, and he took home with him a folder of poster and flier/merchandise designs.

He then didn't turn up to the following jam night, no phone call, no explanation. We found out from a mutual friend that he had stated his intention not to come as he still wasn't happy about the money. So we waited to see if he would come to the following day's practice, he didn't and we all agreed he was out of the band.

However our guitarist is close to him and wants to talk, is there anything left to be said to him other than thanks, but no thanks?

Give him the money. He shouldn't be forced to buy shares of equipment with money that he has earned. It should be voluntary. Commonly owned equipment is often a bad idea anyway. In the future, the rest of you that owns the PA can take a share of the band payment as an equipment rental fee. It will leave him with less money on the gigs, but at least it's a fair situation.

If everyone, including him, agreed to this fund in the first place, it doesn't seem like he has much of a right to complain.

I have no tolerance for people who no-show without any explanation. It's the equivalent of picking up your basketball and leaving the school yard in grade school because you don't think the teams are fair, or some garbage like that. Consider yourselves lucky to be rid of his flaky self and move forward.

The guitarist can always call him and ask him what he wants,
FWIW.

For him not to show up w/o calling is so passive-aggressive.
He attended the same meeting everyone else did and didn't speak up to all the members. Obviously, he wants his way w/o confronting anyone.

Stating that someone felt they're not "seeing" the money sounds like a round about way of saying "I don't want to be part of the equipment pool" and "I want the cash".

Maybe the other members can buy his share out of the agreement and wish him well in his new band. The less people who own the PA, the better. Rent is back to the band.
