Meters Tribute band?

anyone here ever play in a meters tribute band ?

I'm thinking of starting one up & wanted to find out if the general public was into it or not.

Also, whether or not 4 pasty-white guys from Canada will get laughed at for playing New Orleans Funk

Meters tribute band? What a killer idea! I think the Meters are great, but I don't know if they're well-known enough to draw people in on that fact alone, though. However, if you're really good, people WILL come based on reputation. Were you planning to initially keep it local, our tour extensively right off the bat?

I'd definitely go watch your band, but it would be about an 1000 mile drive each way to see you in BC...

HI

Groovy idea. Most would not know it, though. I wish you luck in your project

We do a couple of meters songs in our set. I think a meters tribute band would be great. I bet you'd get a lot of work around mardi gras time.

Tribute bands only work when a band is pretty famous and has a LOT of hits to draw from. You can't tribute a band that has a couple of recent, minor hits. What do you do the rest of the night? Play to only the few hardcore fans and bore everyone else.

You'll be playing mostly for other pasty-white Canadians, right? No problem!
Why not throw in some Neville Bros, Dumpstaphunk, Allen Toussaint, Galactic, Sonny Landreth, etc?

If you are doing it for money then it would suck. If you are doing it for the love of the METERS then it would be ok.......but you would get few gigs and even less money.

TRIBUTE bands need a major act to be successful. the ones that do the best are:

ELVIS
KISS
THE BEATLES
AC/DC
NEIL DIAMOND
QUEEN
ZEP
METALLICA
etc
etc

To make any dough the band needs to be ICONIC and have millions of fans.

There is a Sublime band that seems to be doing well for itself as a tribute group.

A Meters tribute band would be great to hear, but I don't think you'd get many gigs except for clique markets.

You could start a band that draws elements from The Meters. A band named The Aggrolites was signed to Hellcat Records (Tim Armstrong from Rancid) last year and they are heavily inspired by The Meters. They are getting radio play and are currently backing Tim Armstrong on some large tours.

Zombie thread, did the Meters tribute band happen? I only asked because I'm a huge Meters fan, and might be starting a Galactic/Meters cover band with a drummer and guitarist I used to play with. The drummer at first wanted to do a pure Galactic tribute band, but I convinced them to have a little more diversity. I hope this gets off the ground, and can pull some bar gigs by fall/winter(Metro Detroit). I know it will be tough to get gigs, but I think we could get a few.

No, But I wish it had. I guess the problem would be to find the right drummer. If I had the right drummer, it would probabaly all "come together" (pun intended)

That's not surprising that the drummer would be the hard chair to fill. No other drummer sounds like "Zigaboo" Modeliste.

Nah, it could work. Their relative obscurity could be your secret weapon. Just don't bill yourself as a Meters tribute band, even though you are. People will just get turned on to some really great music and then when they compliment or ask you about it that's when you enlighten them. I think it would be awesome.

I might just say we're a NOLA Funk tribute band.

I used to play in a band where we had a bigger repertoire of more obscure New Orleans tracks, rehearsed once a week, go a gig every eight weeks with few repeat gigs (just to obscure material). So I would expect something similar.
