Modern cover songs.......

Some recent threads got me thinking about our setlist and its strong and weak points.

I've read a lot of set list threads, and found some great material to think about....but I large portion were songs we already do / tried.

So in the interest of fitting better in a slightly younger club...... what are some 'modern' cover tunes that are working well for you?
(Modern in this respect is '00 to today.)

Thanks in advance.

I just put together “The Middle” (2002) by Jimmy Eat World… Very “dancy” and EXTREMELY SIMPLE to do. I have to drop it one to sing it, though.

Lonely Boy, Howlin' for You, or Tighten Up by The Black Keys are all good ones.

If you can pull it off, Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People is also a good one.

Seven Nation Army is another favorite, as someone already mentioned.

Are you gonna be my girl, or Cold Hard Bitch by Jet.

almightycrunch, great list. Good combo of old & new. I dig it. Not too sure how well it would fly at some places but at the more rock clubs it would kill.

Pumped Up Kicks is the one we just put together before The Middle, and Moves Like Jagger before that.

I’m on this thread, ‘cause I’m trying to do just like the OP, we’re trying to get some newer stuff in.

We’re in our 50s, and aren’t looking to bounce around the stage, but we need to put some newer songs in there.

I'll be checking out the other suggestions, as well, but they've GOT to be dance, and not to "heavy" for this band.

We play mostly classic rock and oldies but we play these newer songs from that timeframe and they all work very well.

The Middle - Jimmy Eat World
Kryptonite - 3 Doors Down
Who Say You Can't Go Home - Bon Jovi
Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes
Save A Horse, Ride A Cowboy - Big & Rich
Life Is A Highway - even though the original version by Tom Cochrane is 20 years old, the cover by Rascal Flatts came out in the mid 2000s

I recently said we should learn Pumped Up Kicks by Foster The People, Halfway Gone by Lifehouse, and Drive By by Train

This is exactly my situation..........we have the 60's 70's done well. I've pushed in some 80s were cherry picking the 50s.......our guitarist was a huge grunge fan so were doing ok 90s. But the newer stuff eludes us. I like heavier new stuff...and the other two are just outta touch a bit (satillite radio listeners). So its a quandry.
Nice suggestions so far! Keep them up...I see some patterns forming!

We just added Gold On the Ceiling by the Black Keys. I guess you can call Kryptonite, Push, and Low "newer" compared to the nuggets we pull from the 60's and 70's. I've also been pushing to play Get Me Outta Here by Jet. We usually play The Middle toward the end of the show in order to finish with a bang -- that song usually fills the dance floor, then we melt faces with heavy versions of House of the Rising Sun and/or Rockin in the Free World to end the show.

I've been struck at how the younger people in the crowd dig the classic stuff. Even though most of our crowd is under 30 by the time we hit our last set, we don't feel the need to play a ton of newer material -- they seem to dig it wither way.

yeah, its a somewhat odd list, some of it is dancey, most of it is not the "fun" dancey rock that it needs to be. Several of the members came from hard rock/metal bands, and played local metal bars that catered to that crowd and now those places are no more. Its getting harder and harder to play out live anymore, hard to get paid, hard to get a crowd due to alcohol laws and local po-po. Seems to be a dying scene sadly.

Here are a few of the more modern covers we play:

Spacehog - In the Meantime (blast of a bassline to play)
Nickelback - Animal
Seether - Cowboy Song
Theory of a Deadman - Bad Girlfriend, Lowlife
Foo Fighters - Walk, Everlong
Fuel - Shimmer
Three Days Grace - Break
Velvet Revolver - Slither
Tool - Sober (surprising how well this goes over)
Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye
Shinedown - Devour, Save Me
Thirty Seconds to Mars - The Kill

I'd want to kill myself at that show. I have no problem with pop and pop rock, but man you just seemed to pull out every song that I can't stand all in one set list. I'm sure I'm in the minority and it'd go over great tho.

I put in what goes over best like the OP asked, not the entirety of the new stuff we do. You are right tho - these songs KILL, and most are easy and fun enough to play.

Judging by the responses so far....we have some pretty talented folks replying. Satriani and foo fighters are demanding on guitarists and drummers! A lot more heavier tunes than I was expecting! Cool!

I've been assembling a 'wish' setlist for a band I'm not actually in, and have very little hope of finding players for in northern Wisconsin. A cover band playing a good mix of 90's alt/rock/grunge/etc all the way through to current, very new music. I just think this would be SO MUCH fun! Here's my start....

Good Better then Ezra
Song 2 Blur
Machine Head Bush
Going the Distance Cake
Low Cracker
Mother Danzig
Unbelievable EMF
The Way Fastball
Basket Case Green Day
Stars Hum
Been Caught Stealing Jane's Addiction
My Own Worst Enemy Lit
Bound for the Floor Local H
Backwater Meat Puppets
Smells Like Teen Spirit Nirvana
Morning Glory Oasis
Lump Presidents of the USA
Guerilla Radio Rage Against the Machine
Suck My Kiss Red Hot Chili Peppers
Cumbersome Seven Mary Three
Tomorrow Silverchair
Outshined Soundgarden
Spoonman Soundgarden
In the Meantime Space Hog
Two Princes Spin Doctors
Plowed Sponge
Crackerman Stone Temple Pilots
Vasoline Stone Temple Pilots
Possum Kingdom Toadies
Buddy Holly Weezer
7 Nation Army White Stripes
Are You Gonna Be My Girl Jet
Payphone Maroon 5
Moves like Jagger Maroon 5
Steady as she goes The Raconteurs
Driveby Train

Richntiff~ that's an awesome list! It would be very cool to start up what essentially would be a 90s tribute band. Hope you can find the right people to make it happen (you need a pretty serious singer to do soundgarden, pearl jam , AIC etc.....and a good guitarist too! good luck!)

Allmightycrunch~ sounds awesome!

Keep em comin guys/girls!

Very interesting. I'm not in a band and the last time I heard a band in a club they were playing the same old worn out songs that have been played for decades. I mean, if it works for your group and keeps you working then fine. But as a listener I'm bored with that.

While I've heard of most of these groups I don't know a lot of these songs. I'm going to check them out.
