Net based workflow

Ok, here's the story:

I am trying to assemble a band. But instead of recruiting everyone for practice (6 members), I have uploaded an audio file with the song structure + guide melody, and convinced one of them to record his part / improvisation. I would, then, pass it over to the other members, one by one.

However, I don't think my approach is working, as I still waiting on the first part to be recorded. Do you think I should:

a) upload a new audio with arrangement suggestions over the original recording?
b) pass it over to another member to record his part?
c) forget about the whole net based scheme and actually rehearse in a studio?

(c).

Personally, I don't work best in a vacuum; I play best when I can bounce ideas and melodies off other members of the band.

Alternatively, send the file to everyone at the same time, and they can send their files to other people whenever they like; something interesting (not necessarily 'good') might come out of it.

Pete.

I have found a hybrid of face to face and internet sharing that works really well. Every show is recorded on my Zoom h4n. I mix it down and put the mp3s in dropbox, which everyone has access to. I could see if everyone is really motivated they could make it work with internet-based exchange. Nothing will ever replace face to face practicing and performing though. My 2c

Do you do that for rehearsal time as well?

Roughly how long does it take you to mix the raw recordings down to mp3? Do you take the time to cut into individual tracks or just use one big file?

This reminds me too much of our quote approval workflow at my office. We went from carying around a folder with a 5 page letter/quote, face to face reviews with a red pen, skipping people who weren't available, about a 2 hour part time process to a network based, everybody makes changes with no notes about the change, nobody checking their "inbasket", absent reviewers forgetting to forward their tasks, and quotes dying in somebody's inbox for up to two weeks. Quite an improvement.

I'm sure it can work, but it's not for everybody.
