New Band - Issue

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey,
so I tried out today for a band and they said I was in. Was so excited because they were absolutely stunning musicians. There is only one issue, and it's literally the only one. I live an hour and a half away, which works out to three hours for a couple hours of practice. Is it worth three hours driving for a band?

Only you can make that call.

That's really up to you. ARE THEY worth that much of your time? Play with them a couple more times, and if you find yourself resenting the time you spent on the road, then I'd say it's not worth it. I've found myself traveling two and a half hours just to jam with my old band for a couple of hours.

You can learn tunes in the car on the drive so its not wasted time. If the band is as good as you say, certainly a very rare thing, something to think about. As long as you think its worth it, it is. Only you know how much free time you are willing to spend on it, and how good the band has to be to make any given distance worth driving to be with them.

There are probably bands worth that drive, and there are bands that aren't worth the trip to practice if they're practicing at your house.

If it's economically feasible for you to be in a band where you have to drive so far, then as long as everyone is agreeable and you are all having fun, then go for it! You can always make something more out of your drives; find some great spots to eat or cool shops in their town or along the way.

Are their gigs centered around where they live? You might be driving 2-2.5 hours to get to a gig, possibly.

Even if it dont work out if they are as good as you say it can only be a good thing.. And while you there try to suck as much knowledge and experience as you can. One can only learn.

And if its all that - move town...

I drive a half hour one way for one band and then wait another half hour or more for the people that show up late and take forever to get set up. That half hour is time wasted and is more frustrating than if I had spent it driving.

If the band was really good I would give it a shot. Maybe a suggestion you could run by them would be to have a longer practice so you can get more "bang for your buck".

I have a friend that drives a hour and a half each way. He is excited about his band and they have every right to be. But, I would say it is well worth it as long as your comfortable in that situation and you can financially pull it off.

How often do they get together?

It would be too far for me, but then currently I have to walk across the street for my practices.

They get together about once a week. Adds about sixty bucks on to my weekly bills (including meals and whatnot) and therefore it's gonna be rough (in college) but I'm gonna try and pull it of I believe.

I would hope that there will be enough money from gigs to help offset the costs. At least you have the drive time to learn material by listening.
