OK, so while I am not very picky about the folks I play with, I do have a minimum quality level I am comfy with. That said, this new band I checked out does work quite a bit, or rather, the last incarnation of said band worked lots. They cater to the biker crowd, mostly classic rock and newer country stuff. Question: If you were not doing anything else, and had a chance to play with a band that wasn't up to snuff, would you?? FWIW, the drummer is good, and he and I clicked. I could just adopt the "hang with the drummer, lay it down, damn the torpedoes" mentality.....

Lee | I have passed on numerous opportunities because the band was not "up to snuff" and I realized they had limited horizons.
that being said, every band I've been in has had a "weak member". Goes with territory. Depends who it is and how critical. To me, if the drummer sucks, nothing more needs to be said. I'm not in.
but you have to make SOME compromises in order to play out. It's like dating, there are no perfect situations out there. If you get 8 out of the 10 things you're looking for, grab it. |

Is it better to be the weakest player in a technically challenging band, or to be the strongest player in a non-challenging 3 chord per song gigging band? I've been both guys and neither one really sucks. As long as it continues to be fun, and the non challenging bands can be a LOT of fun, go for it. Make a little money, do a little networking, who knows, by this time next year you and the drummer may have an awesome line up!! |

| | | | I say playing in non-challenging bands is fun as long as the drummer (as QORC stated) is good. Or at least his mistakes are only noticable in practice. If the overall sound comes out good in bigger areas the band may be worth a shot. As for hangin only with the drummer i say no, to be as successful as possible u gotta have the other memebers like u so u can be a large part of the deciding on things. |

OK - a qualified "Nope" - if the band in question was a friend's band and the gig was for fun or to help them out and was a temporary thing with the end clearly in sight - I'd consider it. But to join a band that is sub-par with the idea of gigging just makes me cringe.
