New direction for my band

So we're in a period of transition.

We're a three piece rock band. We started in 2004, but have had our latest drummer with us since 2005. Now, our bassist (my sister) is going up to college, 2 hours north of here. I'm heading out to a new teaching job, which is luckily only about 20 or so minutes away from where she's going to school. Our drummer, however, has a solid job here and (understandably) isn't interested in uprooting his family.

Over the past few years, we've done a lot of marketing/promotion and a lot of touring. We've started to build a decent name and a decent following around the state and beyond. This has been a team effort, and we've all sort of slipped into our own roles in the band (ironically, our drummer, although the oldest in the band, is also the most idealistic, which adds a refreshing contrast to my own realistic nature).

The point is that he has made as much of a contribution to the band personality as anyone.

Well, now 2/3 of the band is moving two hours north. Realistically, we all have agreed that it's too far to do any sort of "regular" gigging, especially since any "local" show would mean 4 hours in the car for at least one of us. We won't even think about the impossibility of rehearsing.

Our drummer has been saying all along that he would understand if we started playing with a new drummer, and that it wouldn't offend him. Now, however, he takes a new turn - he says that if we started playing under the same BAND NAME with a new drummer... THAT would offend him.

So now we're torn. Website is set up. We have a tub full of hats, tshirts, CDs, etc. Hundreds of Myspace friends, and a solid email list. Even if I were to sit back on my haunches and not do any promotion at all, we'd still be asked to do at least one or two shows a month. We've played with a couple of national acts, hit some small festivals, and done some light touring. People recognize us on the street, and fans email just to say hello. All of this is integrally tied to the band name.

The drummer is a good friend, and I can't imagine doing the last two years without him there with us, but I'm not particularly keen on starting over - it'll be hard enough to get a new drummer up to speed and get the band clicking again. I'm not sure I want to add to that the annoyance of starting a "new band".

So my question is this: Is he being irrational, or am I? Am I being selfish, or is he? I might have a little more sympathy if he was one of the charter members of the band, but he's not. He's actually drummer number four. He is, however, the one who stuck the longest, and the band dynamic would be completely changed without him... but that part is not up for debate.

Sigh... I like it better when people just quit.

I say 2/3 is leaving and should keep the name. He obviously didn't come up with it. I think it would alright if he told people he was formerly in your band, but I wouldn't change the nane if I were you.

Hi, Dkerwood

IMHO keep the name if there's nothing personal about him in that name. Tons of bands have line up changes and don't change their names mainly for the reasons You stated in Your post.

OTOH some bands continue with similar names with just one person from the original band and not necessarily from the original line up. Is that the drummers goal?

Democracy in a band, so often praised and always failing, will provide You and Your sis 2/3 of the control so there's nothing much the drummer can or should do, if he honours the democracy.

BTW You do have a written agreement about how the cake is divided in a situation like that, do You?

Ya, keep the name. Think about it like, "queens of the stone age," he's not really out of the band just one of the revolving members. I'm sure you guys would play again together if he or you happened to move back closer.

And mabye once in a blue moon he'd want to take a long drive to sit in for a show or a couple of songs.

Keep the name. You have the time and the majority.

If the other one person was the singer and the songwriter who had created the following based on their singing, their songs, and personality, then I would say that they deserve to keep the name based on that and based on geography.

I am facinated when people describe something one of their "friends" is doing, something one of their "friends" said, or something one of their "friends" demands, and it is not something that I would do, say, or demand to someone who calls me their friend.

if someone is leaving the band, their opinion on what happens after their departure is moot and irrelevant.

hell, even Steve Perry couldn't keep Journey from touring.

Who does this guy think he is? Ringo Starr?

So he's offended. Bands LIVE on reputation. Why through away a well known name?

If he really cared about the rest of you, he would understand that and wish you well, WITH THE NAME.

he's a child.

Well, this is the first band that he's been in for twenty years... and easily the most successful group he's been in. He takes a lot of pride in being the drummer for this band, invested a LOT of time and money in the group, and I suspect he just doesn't want to feel like he's been "replaced". I imagine I'd feel the same way, too - I invest two years in a group, and then the rest of the band moves to another city, and I'm left out. I didn't quit, and I wasn't kicked out, but the band goes on without me. Ouch.

Truth be told, I don't want to replace him, but the geography doesn't leave a host of options. He's turned out to be a great guy, with an amazingly supportive wife and kids, and a job that allows him to tour frequently. He may not be the strongest drummer at times, but he's usually solid. He works just as hard as anyone else in the band, if not harder, and leaving him behind will be like cutting out a piece of who the band is...

...but the BAND must go on. Hopefully, we'll find a stronger drummer (IMHO, musically, that's our weak point right now), who will contribute half as much to the band as our current drummer does.
