Just auditioned our new drummer and he is fantastic. He's spent the last 15 years devoting himself to jazz only, can sight read drum music and has memorized all of Chick Coreas toons among others. But now he just wants to lay down a groove and play in a band. We play originals and a few cover toons to fill in the gaps and true to his word he just sits in the groove and plays. I know this will make me become a much better bassist and on top of it all he's easy going and respects the song more than anyother drummer I've ever played with. This has got my juices flowin' big time can't wait till our next rehearsal. Thought I'd pass this along as I've been worried where our next step was going to take us and lo and behold were in musical heaven. Too cool. |

To the OP, I've had a similar experience relatively recently. We auditioned a guy who spent years on the road with various top name blues/r&b acts and my job instantly became a cinch and infinitely more fun. |

But any time he's not playing drums, he's the most unreliable person on Earth. I can never get in touch with him and he has too much going on to be devoted to the music. It sucks.

| | | | Congrats! I am still searching for a drummer, lately I am dealing with ones that play TOO MUCH and don't understand what being in the pocket means. |

He also had technique up the chunk. What a pleasure. I've also played with drummers who couldn't count rhythms. So when you'd say the kick drum is on "and one," not "one and," he had no idea what you were talking about.

I have stayed in contact with the drummer from my last band. Very technical guy who knew what to do, how to do it and where to be at. He made me sound great.
I would say every drummer in these bands I have auditioned for were marginal at best.
I really could not find a good groove with any of them.
Most were what I call loud Rock Bashers. Just guys bashing out rock beats with little technique or style. |

| My least favorite kind. Volume and ability seem to be inversely proportional. |

if i had a nickel for all the times i didn't want to play because the drummer couldn't play.........

I have had theses guys come back at me and say , you should be doing this or your missing that. No, here's the problem, you don't play so good | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
