What the hell are the people who design myspace thinking?? !!!! !!! ???
Yeah, I know now I'm oldschool and outdated, BUT the old myspace put everything a musician needed right there in front of you to see with no hassle, no menus, no pages that take 10 minutes to load. I fiddled with trying to get my page the way I wanted for a pretty long time and it seems no matter what I do, I can no longer have things the way I want them.
I'd like for pictures THAT I WANT to be the first to come up on the page, but it seems that can't be done unless I delete a bunch of stuff.
I'd like to have videos THAT I WANT featured when the page comes up, but it seems I have to put hours into figuring this out before I can do that.
I'd like to have my entire bio be right at the top, so you don't have to click "more" to see it all.
I'm frustrated.
What's the most current user friendly way for an artist to show what he's got. I know facebook is the best tool for promotion, but I'm looking to simply put what I've got out there for more gigs. Thanks. |

| | | | I left myspace when I saw that Facebook doesnt try to soak up every resource you have on your machine; those myspace pages take TIME to load!
I think people are going to be switching over soon. Reverbnation.com or soundcloud or something.

If you use facebook though, make sure you read the fine print very very carefully. It keeps changing and more and more of what you post there becomes property of facebook/Goldman Sach's. |

| | LICENSED TO KILL - any song I play! | | | | | Yep! They took the MY out of MYspace! I thought updating to the new version would load faster...WRONG! I just left it in frustration. It will die a long, slow, agonizing death in cyberspace.

I like the concept. Facebook is very boring, but unless they fix the speed of Myspace they've put the final nail in the coffin...

But it's not the greatest for showcasing yourself as a musician. I just want a page that someone could simply go to as a resume if they want to check me out. Myspace used to be absolutely perfect for that. Simple. Fast loading. Everything right in front of you. Now it just unbelievably freaking annoying and impossible for most people to navigate.
As mentioned I guess I need to just accept it and move on. I used to have some website building programs but they're horribly outdated. Maybe I should just research them artist webhosting things and get something going there. I've a feeling thats whut I gotsta do. |

Bandcamp is also a great way to go. I think its free? |

| | | I too think that the new myspace layout really sucks.
It's slow and not as easy to navigate as it used to be...But
I really dislike facebook and do not intend to set one up any time soon.

| | | | MySpace defies physics by both sucking and blowing at the same time. Like a lot of people, I used to be quite active on MySpace, but they just really turned it to poo in their effort to compete with Facebook.
I really wish Facebook had a blog feature, though.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Mar 2002 Location: Boston, MA | | I've eschewed both MySpace and Facebook in favor of owning my own hosted domain on a shared or VPS web-host for years. It's not TOO pricey considering what you get: http://www.leewhalen.net http://www.sleeplessknight.org
$10/yr for the domain name (DON'T use GoDaddy. I use gandi.net because, despite being French, they've got a clean interface and speedy pages)
$500 one-time fee for the site design (you can probably go cheaper if you find someone on eLance. I used www.twothinkdesign.com and couldn't be happier)
$60/yr on up for your own shared web-host
I have 100% control over everything on those domains. If I want to put a video up, I put a video up. If I need to share charts/MP3s/whatever with bandmates, I upload 'em to a directory and send out the URL. The list of upsides over MyBook and FaceSpace is endless. You also get to dive into the wide world of 'website metrics'. Ever wondered if MySpace/Facebook/whatever were ACTUALLY working for you? You had no real way of measuring that. With your own website, you get to fetishistically measure EV-RY-THING a visitor does and try to tweak the layout to get them to do what you want them to do. Buy your album? Hire you for a gig? You can fire up Google Analytics and start testing this **** out. It's actually kind of fun! http://www.kaushik.net/avinash/2010/...s-targets.html

The MySpace FanReach application is great for sending out a mass e-mail to your fans that have subscribed to your bands e-mail list. We are starting to use Reverbnation as a band tool. Facebook is way better for fan interaction and linking up with the local clubs. Myspace is dying a slow death and they probably have changed it to the point where we will get our own website in the near future. |

A friend uses bandcamp and seems pretty happy with it. Haven't checked out their fine print, though. When we launch the band, we're thinking we'll go with our own website (we have the domain already) plus a simple page in Facebook that directs people to our site. |

My band uses it for booking and a EPK. Its been helpful in getting us festival gigs etc all for free. The new format never fully loads, you cant get music or videos to load etc.
Facebook IMO is great for hunting down old buds etc but a lousy format for bands..very blah. My band is going to bite the bullet and go to bandzoogle soon.

And be careful of the apps. Many of them are owned by Experian ( one of the 3 major credit reporting agencies). Why would they be interested in having access to people's personal information?

Domain name registration is $10/year (tucows.com) and webhosting (arvixe.com) is $30/year IIRC. We didn't need an online store or anything fancy so I did the site myself. I have a little computer experience and such so I just sat down with a couple books on HTML and built the site. Not all that hard really. Again, it's a pretty simple site but it's all we need. I'm not a big fan of FB or MS myself but I link them to my site. I would rather have people go to my site first and then to MS or FB if they wish, but I'll take whatever way.
