Only I was thinking that being able to read charts - follow changes - would be ok in Funk and R&B but, note-for-note style sight-reading? I just don't see that being necessary in that sort of band. In an orchestra or show band, sure - but Funk/R&B? Doesn't compute.
Even in jazz where you are playing the standards, it's more of a chart-reading skill then a note-for-note reading skill that's needed. Hey, I think musicians who can cold-read a piece of music well are amazing! My sight-reading skills are all but none-existant these days, but as for needing to be able to do that for Funk and R&B - I just don't see it.
But I have been short-sighted before...
