Non-reading bassist in all reading band

Only I was thinking that being able to read charts - follow changes - would be ok in Funk and R&B but, note-for-note style sight-reading? I just don't see that being necessary in that sort of band. In an orchestra or show band, sure - but Funk/R&B? Doesn't compute.

Even in jazz where you are playing the standards, it's more of a chart-reading skill then a note-for-note reading skill that's needed. Hey, I think musicians who can cold-read a piece of music well are amazing! My sight-reading skills are all but none-existant these days, but as for needing to be able to do that for Funk and R&B - I just don't see it.

I'm bumping this up again just so I can give everyone a follow up. After listening to the same 4 cd's for the last three weeks and countless hours of practicing learning the tunes, I've just been informed that the band has broken up before I was even able to rehearse with them. I was kinda suspicious about it after they kept on telling me no practice this week and I'm also pretty sure it's a breakup and not me because my contact asked me if I wanted to start a new project from the ground up with him. But never the less, talk about demoralizing. I was really looking forward to this gig and I'm suddenly reminded why I decided to take such a long break from this before.

I know that I gotta get back on the horse ASAP but it was a real kick in the nuts when I got the email this morning. Someone please send me some talkbass love to cheer me up!

Oh man, so sorry to hear that. Any idea why the breakup happened? I'd probably want to know the story before starting a new project with any of them. It's not cool that no one mentioned any problems while you were auditioning (or while you were rehearsing on your own).

Yu can keep you head held high about the situation -- you did your part and made an honest effort. And hang in there -- the next good opportunity may show up when and where you least expect it.

Thanks man. They say it was a matter of losing the rehearsal space so it was a good excuse for people who were tired with it started to get out. Oh well, I've decided to learn the entire "Rent" production start to finish by ear to keep my hands and ears in tune until something new comes along.
