Well either his tone sucks or he has no idea what a good mix sounds like. Or both, I guess.

I would suggest recording your rehearsals. Ask him to try it your way just to hear it.

Sounds very typical of a guitar player who hasn't played in a band mix very much. The recording would be a great idea to help him learn what part of the sonic landscape he should occupy. But, then again mix is very subjective.

i should clarify, the live mix sounds fine but when we start recording watch out. even after rolling the bass completely off & hearing for himself that is sounds sooo much better he still said that. the other lead guitarist got it right away, why can't he?

Maybe he is just so used to focusing on himself and his own sound that he can't even hear himself as a part of a larger whole. Sounds like you're on the right track though.

I have the same problem over and over again with our keyboard player. He even says he gets it, even agrees with me, then continues on as before. People change slowly.

Try this. Have a decent looking female friend you both know together and who listens to your band live a lot go up to him and say, "You know, the sound was okay, but I like your guitar playing and all I really heard was this sorta boomy mush. I wish you were clearer in the mix."

Watch how quickly, especially if he likes her, he changes his guitard sound.

Sounds like his issue is about control not about how good/bad mix is. IME, people like that hate authority and respond instinctively when challenged, even if their behavior leads to less than optimal outcome, for themselves or for everyone around them.

Seems to me, if you have support from the rest of the band, he gets voted down as far as how the band recording is mixed.

As an example, maybe on the next recording, screw up your own tone so bad that the recording is pretty much ruined. Then, justify it as "my tone" and refuse to change it. See how that goes over. The guy can't have it both ways.
