I was asked by some L.A. band to sub in for their bassist at a gig in April. It seems that the place we'll be practicing at is a rent by the hour rehearsal space. Am I obligated, as a "filling in" bassist, to provide funds for said rehearsal space, or is the the actual band member's responsibility? Thanks |

They asked you to sub for the band, not be in the band. You're a "hired gun." |

I have never subbed with a band and been expected to help with their overhead. Just show up on time and have a blast. |

Sometimes the bass player will pay the sub out of his/her pocket for the gig. For example, let's say that the sub expects a minimum of $150 per gig and the gig only pays $75. Well, someone has to come up with the difference.
I remember years ago, my band's keyboard player quit just before a gig (the band would play at this frat house once a month in exchange for rehearsal space). The sub keyboard player wanted to be paid and we had to come up with the cash or go without a keyboard player. |

it is always the band leaders obligation unless some other deal is worked out in advance.
cheers

are you a member of the band? |

No, I'm not a member of the band, I was just asked to play bass for this one gig and I would get paid for it. That's all. |

| | | | I wouldn't pay. In fact, I know muscians that expect to be paid for rehearsals (for sub gigs)! Let alone them pay you for rehearsal space. |

in my cover band, i'm the main cat. if and when a rehearsal is called up, the band leader pays for the space, they (married couple) already take a cut off the top, so they pay for things like rehearsal, promo material, etc...if i'm subbing for another band, they hire me to fill in and i don't (shouldn't) pay for anything. sometimes i get paid to rehearse as a sub.
in my original band, the pay gets split evenly so everyone puts in $ for rehearsal space...

inside a band that would all be determined by how the various band members want it.
just like they would decide how much they want to pay this guy to sub.
if they wanted to they could have said we'll pay you x amount taking into account for rehearsal.
but to actually expect someone who isn't in the band to pay to rehearse would be ridiculous |

Imagine, after a couple of rehearsals, the money you "made" would already be spent.
