Is it obvious?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was travelling away with my day job recently and one night in the hotel got talking to some local couples. After a while the conversation came around to hobbies - it was the usual golf and mountain biking kind of things for them and I mentioned I played in a band. One of the girls immediately said "I bet you're the bass player" I asked how she knew but she just said it was obvious. I've been puzzling about this ever since - has anyone else had a similar experience? What is it about us apart from the good looks, charm and intelligence? Hmmmmm.......

You were neither loud (guitar players, singers, keys) nor dopey (drummers). That leaves bass.

Your TalkBass t-shirt may have tipped them off, too.

you were interesting and worth talking to, and able to hold a consistent, educated conversation with normal people?

I'd say that about gives it away.

I get it all the time. I was told its becasue I'm 6 foot 4 inch and I'd look ridiculous with a guitar and have the limb coordination of a newly born giraffe.

Was standing down an alleyway, 6 foot 4 or so, bearded, dressed in black, drinking a beer outside a bar. Was engaged in a conversation with some character and got to around to explaining my philosophy, i.e. realisation that you are a piece of sh*t, becoming confortable with it, and making the most of your worthless life.

He then says, "I bet you're a bass player".

edit: yes I am balding, bearded, wear a tatty hat and am a bit wider at the waist than anywhere else

Probably because you've got an armadillo in your trousers, I mean it's really quite frightening.

Chubby - Check.
Balding - No! (Praise Jeebus!)
Hat - Unnecessary, see above.
Beard - Check.

Alright, I'm gonna call this 2 out of 3, since I feel my maternal hair genes eclipse the hat issue.

Still, 2 out of 3... I must be a bass player.

Chubby - Nope! I`m actually the most muscular of the group... not to toot my own horn...
Balding - ....no comment.... (I`m way too young )
Hat - Only on occasion.
Beard - I keep a little scruff, but it`s more like a 5 o`clock shadow sort of deal.

I`m also the shortest of the group at 5`9 (`10 on a good day ). The rest of the members are 5`11 - 6`2.

People always think I'm a drummer. Not sure why. Maybe it's because I like to beat on things when listening to music.
