My band is using a lil PV14 mixer with powered Yorkville speakers (NX55p for mains NX25ps for moniters) this is working great for smaller gigs, I own a bigger PA for bigger venues as well (Crown power amps JBL Mpros for mains). I think having your own smaller pa is necessary if your doing any sort of gigging.

We run the following: Bass, Stereo keys, 2 Vox, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, 2-3 drum mics into a Yamaha powered mixer. Can't remember which model, but one of the little box ones. We use either 2-way 12's or 15's on sticks. No sub. We also use a 10" 2 way powered cab for a monitor. We play small to medium (no more than 200 people) restaurants/bars a few times a month.

Works great for us. We do acoustic/rock/pop and jazz.

We also use a Yamaha EMX-5000, a pair of Carvin TRX15's for the mains and a pair Yamaha 12's for the monitors. What I like about the mixer: it accomodates our 5 vocalist, 2 keyboards, an acoustic guitar, has a separate input for ipod/cd player, and multiple output possibilities. Careful placement of the monitors is required considering the number of singers. I can load all this, plus my 210 and 112 cabinets on my modified Total Trolley for load in and out.

I own/use an Allen&Heath Mixwizard3:16, dbx 2215 eq, QSC 3102, and a pair of EV iForce 25. Best sound we ever had, except for an all EV backline provided by the Walk For Autism last year.
