One-off band and show?

I was at this pub last night, and they regularly have bands playing. Usually it's punk or rockabilly / psychobilly. It looks like a really cool place to play but they don't pay the bands, they just pass around a tip jar. It is definitely not the type of venue for my blues band but like I said, it looks like a really cool place to play.

So I got to thinking ... I subbed for a friend's band once. We did a 40-minute set of original material with me on upright, the singer on rhythm guitar and a lead guitarist. No drummer. Great setting and it had momentum. I am seriously considering asking these guys to do this gig with me. Just a bunch of rockabilly and psychobilly covers, and perhaps some of their originals thrown in for good measure (they have some excellent tunes).

Anyone else ever done such a thing, form a band for one night and one show only?

I've done this a number of times doing last minute fill-ins for the agency in town. If you work with the right players it can work pretty well. We tend to play common denominator songs so that there's a good chance that everyone knows the songs and are comfortable with them.

I have done this probably half a dozen times. Saturday I played with some guys for just the second time we decided to get together, just depends on the musicians their feel for the music and each other.
