One phone call can change your life

Sometimes it's amazing the turns life can take. I've recently had to move back to South Florida from Las Vegas due to my job falling through and nothing else available work wise.

I had met up a few weeks ago with an old friend/roommate/band mate who had started a cover band with his old drummer, younger brother and a female singer when all of their day jobs fell through. They're based out of South Texas and recently did an extended stint in Laughlin, NV and I went to see them down there (only 100 miles from Vegas) and they came up to Vegas on their days off and it was great to catch up. We talked about old times and after a few cocktails talked about some "what if" scenarios about me and their band. Didn't think much of it but it was like "hey you never know."

Fast forward to 2 weeks ago and I get a phone call one night. Guess who? My old friend. They're a month in to a 4 month run playing on a cruise ship currently.

"Hey what's up? Umm X did something stupid and got fired from the band. How soon can you get a passport and learn 100 songs?" I said "I'm on it!"

So long story short is I lose my job, drive 2700 miles to move back in with my elderly parents and I'm dreading a job search. Now I'm awaiting my passport, been learning as many songs as I can and awaiting getting on the ship and becoming a working musician!

It's been a bit of a scramble to get all the red tape cut through with documents for the passport, trips to Miami, in line at the DMV, playing till my fingers can't take it trying to learn all the tunes but I'm excited about it! They play a good mix of Top 40, 70's, 80's, and modern stuff.

I'll keep everyone posted internet access is going to be limited on the ship. Right after they have 8 weeks locked in and more stuff on the horizon.

I've been trying to find a working situation for a couple of years now and in one phone call my life changes!

Hell yeah! I heard those gigs can be cool, I've also heard they can be some real hard work, so try and have as much fun as possible, don't let it stress u out.

I'd go for it. For every door, there's an open window

I'm really happy for you! I love when stuff like that happens and I always try to keep it up front in my mind when things aren't goin so swell. I've had similar things happen (and almost happen) to me. All it takes is running into an old friend or just crossong the right path. I believe also that kind of thing is a lot more apt to happen to those open to great things. People with "everything sucks" attitudes tend to push all opportunity away from them. Congratulations. Have a blast!

This is too cool... I just finished my MS and I'm looking for a pro job while working a temp one to pay bills. I've been thinking about getting a tribute band going while I have a bit of time... I'm interested in hearing how this ends up, never heard gig stories from a boat before!

Congrats!

If you haven't been on a ship in awhile, I suggest reading up on preventing/coping with seasickness

Quick update - The cruise is off for now long story short they have been getting by as a 3 piece with tracked bass parts since the guy got fired and I've been going nuts trying to cut through all the red tape of getting my passport and getting a physical so I can be allowed on the ship. The cruise said they need to be a 4 piece and until they are back to full strength they're back on land. They have gigs lined up so I'm not worried just gonna be a couple of more weeks than I figured.
