Guys,
My band is opening for 3 Dog Night this weekend at a outdoor Concert. Expecting a good crowd. We're an 80s hair metal band so this ought to go over great Eh? We were asked to tone it down a smidge after their managment saw our setlist. We get paid some righteous $ for this gig though. Should be a alot of fun. And I Just bought a 1997 Fender P Bass yesterday. Life is good ! |

Do they still have all 3 original singers?

Danny Hutton and Cory Wells are the Two original Dogs left.
Might be bad blood 'cause Chuck isn't even mentioned on Three Dog Night's official website. A shame because IMO Chuck's the best singer.
I remember them from back in the day too...the live record from the mid-70's I just about wore out. Great band.

Their road manager instructed us to "not touch the band".

No Floyd Sneed? (With a name like that, how did he not wind up in a country band? )

I was with a band in the late 80s that opened for a whole bunch of national acts so I met many touring cats who were both cool and fully dickish. Stu Hamm? A 100% dick. Rocco Presita? Totally cool. I mean TOTALLY.
Now, you'd think a pieced-together revival act like 3 dog night (who, their day, were GREAT) would be at least a bit mellow/humble. Go figure! |

I've opened for a bunch of folks, and the experience can range from awesome to ridiculous. Just be prepared for either. You're an 80's hair band, which is a weird combo, but so what? You're hired, so just do what you do and above all else be professional.
Chances are you'll have little to no contact with band members, especially the frontmen. Most likely you'll only deal with management, tour manager and/or road manager. Quite often these cats are full-time dickheads, so be ready for that and don't take it too personally. Be on time, be ready when they need you, don't complain if they show you disrespect, and strictly adhere to their direction. Remember, you're actually working for the promoter, and chances are if the 3DN people are a**holes to you then they will be to the promoter as well. You'll impress your employer by putting on a good show regardless of what they dish out.
There's always a possibility that they're a bunch of sweethearts and it'll be a great hang. But probably not.

When my little band opened for Styx back in the 70s some of those guys really kept to themselves while others (J.T. in particular) came over and hung with us for a while. Managers are often unkind but most fellow musicians are not.

Really, about 95% of the "famous" musicians I've met or played with or hung out with have been really nice, especially those who've had sustained success.

i'm a tdn fan from waaay back (very jealous of you right now -lol). the guys are cool. their bassist paul is a sting clone. depending on the length of their show, they sometimes do a rap spoof toward the end that is hilarious to us holder folks.
relax and just have fun. give us a full report afterwards!

When I was spending time in Reno I did some gigs with Floyd. The last time was two New Year's Eve ago when my wife and I played at the Cal Neva in the Sinatra showroom that hadn't been used in a number of years with Floyd on drums and Bobby Joe Holman on harmonica.

Have a great show! Don't get starstruck and do your own
thing and do it well. (Starstruck... haha ... I actually said that.) Yeah, I grew up on Hendrix, Peter Green, Cream, Dead,
James Gang, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter & White Trash, Humble Pie,
Sons of Champlin, Santana, John Baldry, Tull and Blodwyn Pig.
Who we talking about again?
Yeah, full impression would be fun. I'll leave any dumb
personal comments till the show is over.
