I'm from the old school of bands, were you supplied the sound, including the PA. I retired from music back in the eighties, but came back a few years ago. The one thing I've noticed is the every place we've played supplies the PA(all monster rigs) and pa crew. And everyone seems to set the PA too loud. We played last night and the PA was just kickin'! It hollered and screamed and I could only hear the drums and the mid ranges of my bass. If I stepped away from the front of the stage, I could hear the band, but everything still seemed too loud. Is it just me, yearning for the olden days, or do I have a point. And how do you guys deal with it?

I wonder if I could rig up some kind of personal noise blocking/monitoring system. I may have all I need to do that.

We always play the same volume that we have at practice or in the studio..just enough to keep up with the tubs (drums for all the young'n's)
Set up tight on stage so you can hear each other ..use monitors "sparingly" with just vocals if you can...it will save your butt.(and ears) in the long-run.
with all of the volume from modern systems...all you need is a little "clairity" from the monitors to add to what is coming off of the subs and refections in the room...
