Don't get me wrong. I am close friends with some punks, and there are plenty of metal douchebags out there. The aforementioned is just MY experience.
P.S.
Compromise. Play thrash. | I think you could say that there is going to be d-bags within any group of people no matter where you go. I know plenty of metalheads that are a pleasure to hang out with, and some that talking to is like having a toothache, wedgie, and itch on your back you can't reach all at the same time. Same goes for punks.
To the OP, I would say you guys should just start jamming and messing around together first. From there it might be better to decide if you want to play with these guys. As far as genre's that meet somewhere in between, then I would say play thrash, hardcore, crust, or grindcore. There is a fair amount of crossover between punk and metal. |

Also, a lot of people associate metal with... how can I put this... douchebaggery. | You bell end. |

Compromise. Play thrash. | that's weird, my experience is the complete opposite. I've always seen people call themselves "metalheads" just to seem cool. In my experience, I have a tonna friends who think they're so cool just because they listen to metal. "posers," to use a word you used. Punk is really just about having fun and not caring that you can't play your own instruments :P but in the end I guess there's people in both genres that are hard to get along with.

Which I, and many other true metalheads, don't consider to be actual metal. I hate metalcore kids, too. Definitely, as you said, posers. I know one REAL punk and he's a blast. It's all the FAKES that have the crappy attitude, regardless of the genre.

You should listen to music because you like it ,not because you think it will make you look "cool" (as it often will have the opposite effect if you try too hard)

Bad metal(drummer play super fast, guitar player plays one riff, guitar player 2 plays solo the entire song, the vocal is singing something completely different and the bass is hidden in the mess), it's alot of bad metal out there which sounds crap live and is trying to be mainstream.
And then you got good metal, good metal exists, but can be rare in some of the categories when it comes to metal, good metal(Guitar1 and 2, drummer and the bass plays something awesome and the vocal have a clue whats going on) is very fun to play just like punk(it is bad punk to...).
But if i was going to start a new band i would just jam for an hour or something to see what the sound would be like.

I didn't really care and the guitarist was a metal guy all the way. I at the time I did not like metal at all.
After he left we got a couple of twins (guitarist/drummer) that were also metal guys so we started playing metalcore (think As I Lay Dying) and at first I didn't really like it, but it wound up being fun and opened my eyes to a genre I had never really given a chance to before. Most of the metal I listen to nowadays seems to fall into the "djent" category (who the hell comes up with this crap?)
I find when tuned down so low (we played in Drop C) the guitarists kind of infringe on the bass frequencies anyways so I kind of strayed from the traditional ideas of trying to keep a rhythm and just did my own thing and it was a lot of fun! I always got compliments from people playing out about how "awesome I was at bass" lol. I think it is because most bass players in these types of bands I see play very uninspired... Just chugging along on the lowest open string they have most of the time. Definitely improved my chops during those years.
The moral of this long, pointless story is to maybe not be so closed minded about the playing metal thing. My band wanted to play metal and I didn't, but I got out voted and we played metal anyways - and it was a lot of fun.

Metalcore is one if my favourite genre, my only problem i that i can't tune my bass to drop c, i don't know how to. On my tuner i can change the hz between 410 and 480. |

Play metal with your friends, whilst searching out for other punk musicians, to develop a side project. |

Some genres are good vehicles for getting out and playing real shows consistently in front of crowds and getting paid.
Some genres are commercially limited at the local level and are better suited for those who only want to play in the basement with their friends.
Good luck

if you have a cromatic tuner, tune them to CGCF(A if you got 5 strings).
if not,
EADG->CGCF: hit the flat button 4 times and tune E string and D string until it hits green light, then hold down the fifth fret on A and make it sound like an open C (the D one) after that hold the fifth fret on C(the D one) and tune G string to F.
