If they are, it's a no-brainer, leave them. Do it on good terms, having finished out currently booked gigs. You can even blame your newer project, saying you want to focus on it more, which is understandable since your the leader in that band.
Thanks for playing devil's advocate on this one, this has been the other side of my conflicting feelings regarding this. At the time yeah it got to me, it was mildly humiliating even though it was a room full of "yeaaaaaaah! Metalllica! All modern music sucks!" Types, but I just felt it was uncalled for. But maybe you're right, maybe I do need thicker skin.

I see this all too often, and IMO, its often what leads to bands being mediocre and not getting anywhere.
Ive come close to leaving the band Im in for the same reasons.

I would give them a notice like 2 weeks or a month prior to your last day (gig). Kinda of like if you quit a job, it is nice not to burn your bridges and leave on good terms. If you respect the drummer, that would be the least I would do. You may play in a band with the drummer again down the road.

No problem. Of course only you can truly judge if it was a friendly, although wicked, jibe said in fun, or a real snub; an attempt to humiliate you in public. Body language and tone convey a lot of information that we can't get 2nd hand.

Just in general being accused of being a Pixies fan would not be a big insult as far as I am concerned - and if it happened in a room full of Metallica fans who started saying "All modern music sucks!" I would *absolutely* grab a mic and let them know that Metallica sucks in no uncertain terms. Just listen to their cover of "Turn The Page". Oof. (In reality I like a lot of Metallica, but I wouldn't let them off easy.)

Yeah I don't think it was done in malice. I guess it shouldn't be grounds for leaving. Maybe I just like Pixies too much.

OK - I'm an old guy (50) - the music you favor sounds like 90% noise to me. Painful to listen to. There are some intresting elements though. You have to understand it's pretty far outside the mainstream, right? Nothing wrong with that - I'm all for freedom of artistic expression.

Well, here's the thing. Not only does the first band not fit you, but you don't fit THEM. If they play "generic radio rock", and that's their thing, then perhaps the same fans who like their brand of "generic" rock WOULD NOT like math rock. Whatever. The point is, YOU don't fit in with THEM any more than THEY fit YOU. It's a bad fit both ways. It's nobody's fault, you are just different from the rest of the entire band. And if you are different (in goals, musical tastes, aspirations, etc.) than ALL of them, but you KEEP bringing up the stuff you KNOW they hate, then you are as much the problem as they are.

Either way, your question is silly. Leave the band. They have nothing in common with you. As well, you have nothing in common with them. Simple.

If the band your in isn't playing the music you like to play then the easy choice is to go find what you you are looking for, it's called artistic differences and is the reason most bands break up. Just do it in a classy manner, be honest and say that you have a different type of music you want to play. I am sorry that the others are disrespectful towards you but look at it from their point of view. If the other guys are playing popular music, then you suggesting less popular music isn't really going to fly. Just leave without making a big fuss or making enemies.
