Should I look for a band now?

I formed a death metal band with my friends that lasted for a while (through seemingly infinite line-up changes), but it never really went any where, we never had any gigs or demos, and the lead guitarist/songwriter got much too caught up in his other band and the band eventually died. I've only been playing bass for about a year, and I still have trouble doing a lot of stuff (stamina, fretting notes quickly, etc.), and I have nowhere near enough money for a good teacher. I learned a lot while playing in the band, and I love being in a band and writing music. I want to look for a band to join but I'm afraid that I'll have trouble keeping up with whatever band I may join. Do you think I should try to find one now, or wait about a year?

Absolutely, go for it. Being in a band -- especially a band with players better than yourself -- can teach you a lot and forces you to improve your playing. Not to mention that playing with other people is way more rewarding than playing by yourself.

Bass players are typically in fairly high demand, so you should be able to find a band that's willing to take you in if you work hard and aren't a flake.

Find one now. You will get better faster by playing in a band and also practicing on your own than by just sitting in your bedroom and trying to get better by yourself. You probably aren't good enough now to play in some of the bands that are out there, but you are definitely good enough now to play in the rest of the bands that are out there. Find one of those and start playing now.

The more over your head the other band members, the faster you will learn
Go for it.
