Should we give him the boot?

So I'm in a death metal band, and we have two guitarists and a drummer who would rather play guitar. One of the guitarists is a true pleasure to work with, he cares about each instrument equally, he contributes great ideas, and he even goes out of his way to make sure my bass is heard.

The other one is a different story. He's what you all would call a "guitard". He's incredibly defensive about his gear, and he contributes absolutely nothing to the band. While me and the other two members are discussing a song, he's in his own little world, playing whatever crap he sees on Ultimate-Guitar.com. He doesn't even like or listen to death metal, and whenever I present new lyrics (I write all the band's lyrics), while the rest of the band enjoys them and offers input, he just writes them off as stupid. He leaves practice whenever he feels like it so he can go play basketball or video games or whatever, and he's just a pain. It's gotten to the point where we have to practice without telling him (which in turn makes practice go way smoother).

Thing is, he's a pretty cool guy besides all of that, and we're good friends. So I don't want any hard feelings or resentment (he has a terrible temper). I haven't really got the heart to fire him, but it's looking to be inevitable. What do you think I should do?

You have to "nip that in the bud" matey!

If you address it early, it clarifies the situation for everyone concerned, and may allow the friendship to continue. Just because the musical arena isn't suitable for your band and the guitarist, doesn't mean you acn't be friends outside of that situation.

If you leave it, the resentment grows, and the inevitable feelings of him being hurt when he is asked to "move aside" just increases.

I hope you can find a solution which is acceptable to everyone concerned - good luck!!!

dont let any members slow you down. even if its your friends. ive learned that a few times. ya its hard to kick them out but if they dont seem serious or like they want to be a part of the band you gotta kick'em out, or that 1 member can bring everyone and the band down.

My second bass teacher taught me... "You're only as strong as your weakest member".

Sounds like he's that pick. I'd say, discuss with the band and then him. Perhaps he'll turn around but if not, hopefully you can leave on good terms. Like others said, just because he's not good for the band, doesn't mean he's not good as a friend. His aspirations just might be elsewhere...

yes 100% agreement to everything said above and also if you need another guitar player then do discuss the time and commitment issues before hand
