So I had my 1st audition in, like, 6 years...

So, yesterday I go to audition with this band, whose music I have not yet heard, and I had totally forgotten everything that was in their craigslist ad. I actually arrived a little early, before the band even showed up, but they didnt leave me waiting long. So the guitarist is helping me unload my gear and I ask him what they sound like. He says he would say a mix of The Melvins, Kyuss, and another band I forget. I've heard both of those bands, and Ive liked their stuff, even though Im not very familiar with most of their stuff.

So I get set up, and the guitarist asks me if Im tuned standard. I say I am, and ask what tuning he's in. C F Bb Eb he says. My response is Really? So I tune up to him, warning him that I am completely unfamiliar with this tuning. So he starts showing me some parts to this song. A little odd timing, but I dig the riff and the style and we all start jamming on it.
I surprised myself, I actually maintained my self and was able to incorporate some of my style into what I was playing. We must have went through at least 8 different songs they had previously written and I held my own on all of them but the last one, which had lots of changes I couldnt follow. But things went over pretty well.

So afterwards we're chillin, and the lead singer chick (who happened not to sing during this session) tells the rest of the band that she thought I was a better fit than all the other bassists that had given it a shot and that they should go with me. I was digging that, I liked playing with them, it really isnt the type of music I would write myself, but it was really fun to play with them, and I told them I was down to commit. So now I'm in a new band (I have no idea what theyre called), playing in a foreign tuning (to me), and things are swell.

Not bad, since Ive only been to 2 auditions ever. The first one was after I'd been playing for a year, I wasnt very good, but that band was willing to give me a chance, even though I ended up not taking the position. 6 years later I go to my second audition and nail it! Sweet!

Congratulations, you're 2 for 2. I hope the new band works out well for you and has a tolerable name.

Congratulations, it takes some cajones to step out and play unfamiliar material, much less unfamiliar tuning! You can be proud of yourself even if you hadn't gotten the gig.

Congrats.

You'll probably find that since you approached the audition with an open mind and now have to rethink your approach becase of the alternate tuning, you're going to grow a lot as a player.

Have fun with it.

Yeah, Im definitely excited about learning the new tuning. I was putting it all down on paper and realized that its basically just 2 whole steps down, but it'll still be something to get used to. I've played in Eb before, and possibly even a few times in Drop D, but never in C, so it should be interesting.
The songs were really pretty easy, simple riffs, not too many chor changes. I started throwing in little fills, even though I wasnt completely sure they would work out. Some did, some didnt. But yeah, Im excited about it.
I guess theyve been playing shows without a bassist, so hopefully it won't take me too long to learn the material and I can get back on stage soon.

Oh, and thanks for the congrats guys.
