Songs a "Classic Rock" singer didn't know

Sign in to disble this ad
So I put an ad on craigslist for a Classic Rock singer for our band. We're all 38-45. I emailed our list to someone (44) who responded -- I asked up front, can you do our list? He said all the right things, knew most of the songs, and would listen to the rest he didn't know. He had 3 days to prep. We rent a space for 3 hours....

We start by calling out Badge -- he didn't know it...

So he calls out 4 songs off our list. He over sings them, then says thats all he felt comfortable doing.

We know he's terrible and not the guy, but we had the space booked and just want to play, so we call out and play a bunch of songs that he's either: never heard before, or couldn't even fake his way through with the printed lyrics, seriously:

Brown eyed girl - couldn't fake it
Stray cat strut - never heard it
hot legs - never heard it
hot blooded - never heard it
Refugee - never heard it
Show me the way - couldn't fake it
Brandy- couldn't fake it
Badge - never heard it
Feeling Stronger Everyday - never heard it
But the winner: Honky Tonk Woman - never heard it!

I asked what he listened to in Jr high and H.S. His response: Metal.

Where did you grow up? Idaho

He packed up as we continued to play and then stiffed us the $10 he said he'd split the costs.

Our drummer now refers to him a "Hayseed" .... I think we have a new name for the band.

He listened to metal in his formative years, and never heard "Hot Blooded"? No, it ain't metal, but if Idaho had any kind of rock radio station back then, it's guaranteed they played it. This guy never found himself somewhere where he couldn't dictate the music, and had to settle for the radio? Ever?

I feel your pain, man.

Sounds like a metal head who's thinking doing rock-40 type classic songs will be 'easy money' for a guy of his vocal talent and background

:: ends sarcasm ::

I can't understand why he'd lead you to believe he knew your list when he clearly didn't know your list. He knew he didn't know your list... I wonder what he thought he'd do when he got there? Did he hope you guys wouldn't notice? Was he hoping you'd abandon your list and opt to jam on some Metallica or Anthrax?

I'd send him a bill for the hours of your life you'll never get back. Explain that you don't expect payment - that you're waiving it - but at least let him know the cost! LOL

He was 44 and didn't know any of those tunes you listed? And cited the fact that he was a metal-head as an explanation?

Forget Idaho - he was living under a freakin' rock. How you can be that age in America and be so oblivious to so many classic tunes is incredible.

Maybe he was in a coma or something during the late 70's, early 80's...

Nah, the metal thing was a ruse.
He was waiting to pull out his Barry Manilow repertoire.

Hi.

Well, in my youth (late 80's) we once jammed with a hard rock/metal drummer from the next door stable and were thinking of songs we all could jam. Smoke On The Water: Now there's (was) a tune EVERYBODY knew... Not this cat, couldn't play it at first, had NEVER heard it and didn't know Deep Purple either .

As for Your problem, If I don't know some tunes, I say so, and am willing to learn. Either to play or to sing.

I'm from another continent, I know, but a few titles on Your list don't ring any bells:

hot legs - hot blooded - Show me the way - Brandy - Feeling Stronger Everyday

Can't imagine them being too difficult though, especially with lyrics sheets, being "classic rock" .

Hot Legs sounds like a fun title. I'd imagine a Google search would definately get me somewhere nice, but not necessary to the song . What's the artist?

Regards
Sam

Your list is very good, the only one I don't know or couldn't fake solo would be Show me the way. Course, I don't sing. Oh, and I never learned any of the Manilo Metakl either....

"Hot Legs" by Rod Stewart - "I love ya honey!"

It's actually got a really nice little bass break in the middle!

Is "Brandy" the song that goes "Brandy. You're a fine girl."?

I feel your pain, brother. I'm in the same age group and I grew up listening to metal (and punk and jazz and classical and whatever else I could get my mitts on), but given three days and a song list I'd be ready for the audition. I mean, here in 2009 we've got this thing called the Internet (youtube, bittorrent) and 911tabs has just about everything a guy could want for free. There's no excuse. The guy just sucked.

Seriously, though, I've run into the same problem trying to find a decent female singer for a classic rock band. How can you not know the phrasing for "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"? Heck, I've auditioned girls who didn't know the backups for "Mustang Sally"!

Hot Legs - Rod Stewart (from your side of the pond)

Show Me the Way - Peter Frampton (also from your side of the pond)
Brandy - Looking Glass (a "one hit wonder" band from my end of town)
Feeling Stronger Everyday - Chicago

A classic rock setlist without at least a few of the following:

Cream
Zeppelin
The Who
The Guess Who
The Stones
Hendrix
Skynyrd

...etc, to me, is not a Classic Rock setlist.

I think the songs listed were just the ones they called out:
